High Country Kolsch is a pale, mildly hopped German ale. It is the yeast (an authentic Kolschbier yeast) combined with a portion of wheat malt that gives this beer its unique, delicate, and characteristic flavour. All natural, no preservatives. In pairs perfectly with German cuisine, chicken or fish.

My first true Kolsch, however it remains typical of most beers under the German Beer Purity Law. Light Malt, Light Hop, seems almost of a champagne style yeast, similair to Kasteel Cru. Dry, refreshing, a real beer post running/biking/jumping/cartwheels. The head lasts, preventing the beer from becoming uncomfortably skunky. A style to explore but not neccesarily for me to go back to.

Straw gold body that was fairly cloudy but with no visible floaters, a thin bubble skiff remained after a few minuets that was thick around the edges of the glass, very average looking beer. They typical bitter apple aroma that I seem to come across in most German style beer with faint traces of wheat during deep inhales, very dark smelling and the typical German hops comprise most of the sent, this style of beer never appeals to me but this one wasn’t so offensive. Can’t pick out much in the flavor, a sour apple that I think comes from the hops is built on a very wheaty back ground, usually I’m not a fan of this style of beer but this one wasn’t nearly as harsh tasting or vile, it seemed almost creamy. This brew was very smooth; medium to full bodied and felt refreshing. Like I’ve stated a few times before not normally a fan of the style but the wheaty twist on this one really works for me, I suppose it’s a ok beer but for the style its above average. Entire review done while watching Miami Ink.

Pale gold that produced a short lived white rocky cap that simmers to a skim and leaves a small ammount of spotty lacing. Aroma is on the mild side, which it should be. A good mix of mild fruit, wheat and hops does exist with the hops being slightly less prominent than the fruit. A touch of malts. Taste is pretty good and left me drinking this way to fast. Light on the flavour, but it is well balanced between noticable wheat, hops, soft malts and fruit. Leaves mouth pleasantly dry. Light bodied with light carbonation. Slight spritziness with a very quick shot of bitterness and a weak aftertaste that does linger. Not a heck of a lot here but it is still refreshing and really drinkable. How it fares against other Kolsch brews I cannot say. A mild beer that has caught my attention. Could be drunk in mass quantity instead of mass produced swill.

Bottle: Poured a whitish yellow color beer with a big bubbly white head with average retention. Aroma of malt with some discernable hops are quite pleasant. Taste is refreshing and pleasurable at first with a good grainy malt presence and some light bitter hops. After a couple of sip I started to feel a creamy buttery taste reminiscent of dyacetil that was not overly enjoyable.

This poured into a light gold colour with a thin, short-lived head. Aroma was subdued, with a hint of malt and a smaller hint of hops. The taste was crisp and clean, and a tiny bit sweet. A nice, refreshing beer.
