At a brewfest I poured this one out. It was astrigent and had a pencil shaving flavor. it reminded me of a watered down feeble attempt at Guinness. No head. Good, but deceptive black color. Sour, like wood sorrel without the sweetness, scratchy, blach.

Had a somewhat odd feeling about this bottle, but I needed to fill out a mixed sixer to get the discount and it fit the 6th slot. Bottle states brewed in Utica and I believe this would mean contract brewed. Moderately pleased overall as it pours a dark brown with a lasting head and spots of lacing. Good aroma of light roast, mild chocolate and earthy peat. A touch thin, but otherwise drinkable. Flavor is more subdued than the aroma.

It pours a very dark-brown/black with some hints of red. The head isn't much, not much lace either. A sweet aroma including roasted malts, faint hops, citrus, grapes, and some spiciness. The mouthfeel is smooth and rich. Flavors of burnt/roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, hops, orange-citrus, light molasses, mint, and spices. Almost comparable to a stout/porter, yet a lager?

I had this beer at Buffalo Wild Wings in Valley View Mall (Roanoke). This beer was a tad disappointing. It looked good (nice head retention, black as night) but tasted sweet and the body was thin. For the price of this beer, I will likely pass on it in the future.

Aroma is smoky with a yeasty overtone, not strong but OK. It pours a semi-transparent Coke brown with a fluffy and thick, if not persistent, pale tan head. Flavor is a bit weak, but malty and smoky with hints of spice and molasses. Texture is smooth and fizzy, just a bit watery. If they can "thicken" this beer it will be a winner.

Recently acquired as it just showed up in my fridge at work all by itself. Cost analysis is "best guess" from a co-worker. Pours a medium black/dark brown if there is such a thing with virtually no head. Lacing minimal. Roasted malts and chocolate - well-balanced. Clean finish.

Sampled from bottle. Pours clear blackened brown with a thin, creamy white head. Toast and mocha notes in the aroma. Balanced flavor with roasted malts dominating the flavor profile. Otherwise clean. Light-bodied, well-carbonated. A bit thin. A well-made dunkel.

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8
Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Appearance: The body has a dark brownish color with a slight reddish hue. There is some visible carbonation that flows up to the tall tan head. The head had very good retention and lacing. Smell: There is a lightly roasted character and sweet malted barley with just a hint of hops. Taste/Mouth: The flavor has some slight roasted coffee notes with sweet bready and roasted malt notes. Hop flavor is light and brings some mineral/leafy notes to the finish. The finish is rather clean with roasted flavors and hop bitterness fading quickly. The palate is a smooth medium body with just the right amount of carbonation to help clean the palate. Notes: Overall this is a very enjoyable and very drinkable black lager.
