Maui Brewing Co. (MBC) is proud to announce a collaboration with Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales (JPAA) of Ann Arbor, Michigan to create a very special beer, Sobrehumano Palena 'ole. This will be Maui Brewing's first collaboration released in a can. The release is scheduled for June 8 at SAVOR, an annual craft beer and food exposition held in Washington DC, and will reach all 11 states Maui Brewing Co. beers are available. Sobrehumano Palena 'ole is a red ale brewed with liliko'i and cherries. MBC and JPAA will both brew this beer; however MBC will use standard fermentation while the JPAA version is a barrel aged sour. The beers will be packaged both by MBC (in cans) and JPAA (in bottles). MBC will produce approximately 4000 cases and 80 barrels in draft of the Maui version. Ron Jeffries of JPAA tells us a little about how this project came together, "John and Garrett were planning their collaborations for 2012 and because John is from Michigan and coming home for the holidays my name came up. This whole idea came together really fast -- just weeks before John's visit. It's been a very challenging blend to develop -- I'm super-excited about it and a little intimidated at the same time. I've been enchanted by Hawaii for years and it's been great to work with everyone at MBC and get to know them. I always enjoy collaborations but this one is something really special." Just like the beer itself, the name, Sobrehumano Palena 'ole, is a blended Spanish-Hawaiian term meaning "superhuman" and "without limits". John Walsh of Maui Brewing Co. says, "I think the names for the beer are a perfect fit. When we started this there were literally no limitations or boundaries placed on the project whatsoever. That type of latitude is rare. Collaborating with Ron and Jolly Pumpkin has been a dream of mine for years. It's an honor to see it become reality."

12oz can pours opaque sort of copper-y amber with a nice tan colored head of foam. The aroma is a good bit of roasted malts interlaced with malt sweetness and mild degree of vague hoppiness. The taste is rich red ale goodness with sweet maybe 40L crystal malts ’o-plenty’ residual base malt sweetness, plenty of malt roastiness, biscuit malts and Meladonin malts. Behind those notes are thin layers of smooth sweet cherry like fruity esters. The sweeter and roastier malts as well as faint vague hops and esteriness all come together nicely here.

Thanks to slowrunner77 for the chance to try this. Can poured amber/brown with a thin, soapy white head. Aromas of grass and faint funk. Rather bland flavors of wheat bread with the faintest bit of cherry at the end. I had been saving this really hoping that it would be awesome but it's not as good a brew as I was hoping. I'm thinking if they brewed this at the Jolly Pumpkin brewery in Dexter this may come out with more tartness.

Hazy redish brown with brown/red foam head. Aroma is bread with some cherry in background. Taste is thick, siropy, bit sour beer with again cherries but also some dough. Aftertaste is mixture of cherry again and sour dough. Not my style of beer. (Salt Lake City 201208)

Pours a cloudy amber-brown color with a finger of frothy tannish head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing. Aroma is a mix of sweet light toasted caramel malts with cherries, some tropical and citrus hops, passion fruit, and a bit of bready malts.Flavor starts off with cherries, sweet caramel malts with some tropical hops. Through the middle, the bready malts come through with more citrus and tropical hop flavor and a touch of passion fruit. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a sweet and fruity finish. Very drinkable, the blend of amber ale and tropical fruits works fairly well.

Pours a cloudy amber color. Smell is mild, some cherries. Taste is hops up front, some cherries, malts kicking in at the finish. Overall a decent beer.

12 oz can. Pours hazy reddish amber with a smallish creamy off white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet malts and some fruits (cherry).

The flavor is a little sweet acidic cherry and tropical fruit with a weird medicinal leathery finish. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, it's a bit subdued but a decent fruit beer.

Sampled on 6/14/2012. This fruit beer pours a hazy/cloudy reddish copper color from a 12oz can. Medium sized white foamy head, with decent retention and nice lacing. The aroma is malty and sweet with some cherry and a touch of Liliko’l . A medium bodied fruit beer. The malts are fruity and sweet, with some tartness. The hops are herbal and earthy. A touch of tartness, which is more from the Liliko’l and the cherries than the yeasts, I think. Decent carbonation. Nice summer beer. The fruit flavors are natural tasting without a lot of sweetness. Interesting combo, not quite sure I like the Liliko’l though. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly tart.

Drank one a little too warm. A tiny but of tartness, obvious biscuit malt and cherries, and not much in the way of passion fruit. Will add when I have one cold. Cool beer though.Tasted the same colder. Good, not quite up to the awesomeness I was hoping for from these two.
