Lion Heart Stout

12 oz bottle from Lueken’s. The bottle had almost as much dust coating it as it did white sediment resting at the bottom. I have no idea how old this is. Pours nearly black with sparkling beverage type bubbles that make up the brown head. It didn’t last more than a couple of seconds. The aroma is light with hints of alcohol, olives, sweetness of something vaguely malty, faint burnt malts, toffee and caramel. The carbonation is above average and struggles to pull up any flavor from the depths of the brew like abyss. By midway I finally start to notice flavors like sweet malts, toffee, dark fruit, some burnt malts and faint caramel candy. Tasty brew for a beer beyond its prime.

Pours very dark with about an inch of brown head which dissipates to nothing within a minute. Roasted malt is dominant in the aroma with a touch of chocoalte. The mouthfeel is a little thin and oily and leaves a slick feeling after the first few gulps. The taste is pretty decent, but nothing out of the ordinary: roasted flavors, maybe a touch of vanilla, with a sweet maltiness giving the beer a nice back bone. Not a bold stout, but it certainly does the style justice. I didn't realize this was from Jamaica until I got home, and I was a little concerned that a tropical island might not brew a good stout. It turns out I was pleasantly surprised that, while not perfect, this was a refreshing and quite tasty stout.

I had this beer in Jamaica at Couples Swept Away on Tap. A very nice stout, however, I couldn't get too into it given the heat. (I don't particularly like stouts in the summer/heat). In any event, I drank quite a few of these in the evening and I was pleasantly surprised. I typically do not equate stouts with the Islands, but Jamaica did a good job. The beer had a nice dark color and decent legs. The head was creamy and the taste was somky and roasted. This beer is the made by the only true Jamaican brewery - Big City Brewing. This beer can't be obtained in the states as it does not have any preservatives in it giving the brew a short shelf life. If you can get your mitts on it, give it a try.

This tropical stout has the 'heart of a lion' and is basically black in color with a short lived, foamy brown head.....it smells strong & smoky, laden with sweet 'n fruity essences like cotton candy/bubblegum. Medium to full bodied and a bubbly mouthfeel...... Clean flavors here offer up some syrupy coffee & roasted chocolate, with a playful fruitiness. The finish is ok; sweet and grainy, a bit rusty......A tasty sweetness overall. Although the strength is evident, things are drinkable, almost quenching; along with a low bitterness. The bottle notes that pilsner & roasted malts are used. I like it.......... 'taste the pride-feel the strength'
