This Doppelbock, or "Double Bock", is a dark, extra full bodied lager after the best Bavarian tradition. Such beer was created by monks for the tough fasting period of Lent. They called it "liquid bread". Look for flavor notes of chocolate, candied fruit and roasted malt.

Showing 8.6% ABV. on label. Pours a hazy deep amber colour with mild red highlights. Big frothy beige head that lasts long with some foamy lace. Lots of raisins and plums in the aromas. Eventually, yeast come out with some spices and mild hops. Sweet flavours with the dark fruits and hints of chocolate. Caramel blended with the light grassy hops. Good brew, but a little too much for such a big bottle. The sweetness does not help.

Cloudy dark brown pour. Small head recedes but sticks around till the end. Leaves bits of lace. Aroma is sweet, chocolate and fruity. Flavour follows the aroma but not as sweet. Dark fruits, toffee and chocolate. Has a sour finish. Medium smooth mouthfeel. Really enjoyable beer. I think I need more.

Corked 750ml bottle cellared from last year. Decants a hazed chestnut-orange color with ruby highlights. Massive puffy cap...good retention, laces well. Aroma is dominated with bready-cookie dough malts, cocoa, figs, herbal woodyness, some mustiness....wonderful complexity. The front is thick and rich with toasty-roasted malts some sweetness ensues like toffee, balance is achieved with a pervading noble hop herbal bite,....center is complex with coffee-dark fruits, cocoa, nuts, pipe tobacco, earthiness....finish is long and rich, like liquid bundt cake. Excellent rendition of the style...really a rich satisfying drink without being too sweet .

Pours a deep, opaque coffee brown with a nice, though not too persistent, tan head. Rich, malty aroma has a fruity overtone plus caramel and smoky notes and a nutty hint. Lip-smacking flavor delights with malty, caramel, nutty, earthy and subtle fruity notes. Smooth texture is quite thick, though the fizz leaves a little to be desired. Liquid bread? Sure - except try making a sammich with it. :D
