Hull’s Great Fire of 1900 left a permanent mark on the city’s urban downtown landscape. This solemn date decorates the top of the large portico that opens up onto our patio. Mille neuf cendre (Turn of the Cindery), with its subtle aroma of smoked deli meats, is inspired by the traditional Rauchbier of Bamberg. A whiff of beech tree delicately makes room for a honeyed fullness in the mouth, yet is maintained by a fickle effervescence. Its clean taste leaves ever so slight traces of smoke, like a distant memory…a hundred years gone.

On tap at brewpub. Pours a pretty large frothy creamy beige head and has a fairly clear amber appearance. Lots of thick dirty lacing. Aromas are quite smokey immediately, some spices, woodsy hints and hints of earthy hops. Flavours are toasty malts, hints of caramel and has that smoked malt taste in the finish. Smooth and slick mouthfeel. Lively carbonation.

Had at the brewpub. Pours a hazy golden-amber colour with a warm cap and a little lacing. Smells smoky at first, but calms down with time. Lactose notes eventually come out. Wet mouthfeel and medium-light bodied. The smoke in the taste is pretty light. The base of the brew is kind of fruity and it is more noticeable as the smoke fades out. I also get lactose notes in the taste.
