In The beginning, there were ales. As far as anyone knows, the first beers made were 'top-fermented', which is longhand for 'Ale'. Sometime long before the 1860's, beers became popular that were made in Northern Europe with a bottom fermenting yeast strain that liked the colder temperatures. Because they had to spend weeks aging before they tasted their best, they were known as 'Lager' beer. Lager is the German word for 'storage'. Since they had to sit a while, they took up more time and space and as such were harder and more expensive to make. Where ales are meaty, lagers are sinewy. Where ales are stree, lagers are 'haute couture'. Where an ale might hit you over the head and take your wallet, lagers donate to charity and adopt stray cats. While an ale might steal your car or try to date your daughter and keep her out all night for who-knows-what purpose, a well bred lager would offer to clean your house while you're on vacation and leave fresh scones and coffee for you when you return. Now, don't get us wrong, ales can be a lot of fun to hang out with when you're in the right mood, and if you have bail money on you. But what's wrong with livin' uptown from time to time, on a nice street, where the doormen all wear those little uniforms, the air smells of flowers, and lagers rule the Earth. Cheers! Like Adam and Eve, Issac and Ishmael,Mao and Confuscious, Good and Evil, Day and Night, Hittites and Visigoths, John and Lorena, or Groucho and Moe, Ales and Lagers are as different as can be. Still, we must love each other for who they are, seperately but equally, with liberty, and justice, for all. Cheers! Our only Lager, brewed with loads of imported Saaz hops and a bottom-fermenting yeast strain that leaves it a bit lighter with a lot of smoothishness.

Comes out of tap clear, bubbly golden with a nice snow-white head. Aroma is malty and strongly fruity, typical but appealing. Crisp, malty flavor has a strong pear and apple undertone and a yeasty hint. Mouthfeel has good body and fizz, and a hoppy note comes out in the finish.

Saaz nose grassy biscut and some nice sour funk. Not a strong nose though. Classic gold body with moderate short-lived head and poor lace. Mouth is a bit on the fuzzy side but avoids being watery. Flavor profile is clean a bit sour with a sweet note in the center, some nice grain and a dry finish. Nice job on the flavor. RERATE 9/2/15 decent lace, very pretty beer, well done but on the mild side.

On tap @ Aubrey's in Oak Ridge - about the only place in town to get decent beers. Vibrant golden yellow color with a white head and cap, some lacing, nice carbonation. Light lemongrass and light malts in the first whiff and taste, clean and grassy, lightly sweet, nice noble hops presence, mild but lgihtly spiced bitter linger, flavorful and refreshing. This is a good pils and nice representation of the Czech style.

No matter how I try, it is tough to give a quality Pilsner an excellent numeric rating. The flavor just isn't that rich, appearance kind of pale and dull, aroma bland...but the way I judge is a good balance in taste and crisp feel. This has both, so is towards the upper tier on my pilsner scale. There are some better ones that I can think of offhand, but for the price that Lagunitas is getting down to, this is hard to pass on in this hot summer heat.

Enjoyed in Brooklyn. Pours a clean golden colour with a long lasting frothy white head and lacing. Mild grain aromas. Kind of a thick mouthfeel. Malty taste with a little bitterness and a cereal aftertaste. Not bad, but not my cup of tea.

takin out the old fire engine for a spin, lucky bunny .. . Pours a deep yellow .. medium strong head .. great lacing .. you got any speeding tickets? .. . some light corn, light straight yellow squash, straw!, light bitter sweetcorn , and a light sliced bitter honey .. . medium to short finis .. nice for an American interpretation of the style- pils gotta be crispy! .. . .i don't know how that could be true, because women don't have groins...

Typical for the type in all charateristics, but a bit more/better flavor than most. Grassy aroma, clear golden color with a fluffy white head - clean, crisp finish.

Poured a hazy golden colour with a small bubbly head which leaves a light lacing.Aroma is sweet and slightly floral.Very smooth with medium body.Flavor,Sweet malts, lemon and a little spicy. Not bad for a style that is not one of my favorites.

It pours a light golden with fairly thick white head and copious lace. A solid aroma of barley malts, light hops, lemon-citrus, and mild spice. The mouthfeel is smooth and rich. Flavors of sweet malts, hops, lemon-citrus, and light spices. Good brew!
