The Saint Franziscus Abt 12 10% ABV, a Belgian Style Abbey Ale of powerful proportions. While a Prior is the head of a particular monastery, an Abt is the head of the whole monastic order. So this ale is the crown jewel of abbey ales. With a hint of chocolate and complex estery notes, solely from malt and fermentation. No spices were added. Judge it for yourself!

    Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

On tap at the brewpub pouring up muddy mahogany lasting light mocha head and a little bit of spotty lacing. The aroma is kind of winter spice with bits of sweet caramel candy and molasses to go along with a background of musty sweet dark fruitiness. The flavor has notes of dates, figs, smooth sweet pureed prunes, some coriander, yeasty spices, a layer of crusty crystal maltiness, a just noticeable level of cinnamon and then a smooth mix of black licorice, caramel and a pinch of vanilla. It then begins to pick up a brown sugar sort of note. Smooth tasty brew.
