I remember when a Centurion was a character from the 1970s Battlestar Galactica, and now it’s a beer. This is described as a Spruce Ale but not much in the way of spruce aroma. Had I not known it was a spruce ale, I would have thought it was just a boring blonde ale because that is what it looks like, smells like, and tastes like. Apparently at one time this was known as Twisted Spruce Ale……who knew?

Bomber from the LCBO and at 6% ABV. Pours a very slight hazed, golden colour with tiny particles running through it. Beautiful frothy white head, great retention and loads of thick bubbly lace. Aromas are a mix of herbal notes with some grainy malts and slight sweetness. Mild dry mouthfeel with a little grassy bitterness. Cereal malts lingers lightly. A nice twist on the IPA easy-drinking style, but do not feel the spruce.

The beer pours a crystal clear light gold colour with a smallish white cap that lasts a while. The aroma is sweet malt, grass, a metallic tang, and some spruce. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, with average carbonation. Flavour is very grainy, with a little bit of spiciness. As with a previous rater, not tasting any spruce here. -

Bomber bottle - puts a clear gold ale in the glass with a small white cap. modest carbonation. Aroma seems to be in character with all Highlander brews - understated - Light hints of sweet malt, some grassiness, some light herbal notes, ever so light hint of spruce. Flavour is earthy-malty with hopping in a support role - long rich finish. The spruce didn't seem to show up in the flavour...unless it was hiding under the hopping -- anyway an interesting ale with some character but the spruce is toned back so far you gotta really look for it.
