Dark coca cola brown with a whole mess of small random bubble islands. Aroma is milder than I expected , some clove, earthy malt, soya sauce, maybe nuts. Meh. Taste is much the same but add in a coffee bitter finish. Beer is tasty but average, probably 6 years ago when this recipe was new my mind would have been blown but now its just white noise in a sea of “extreme brewing”

A very good beer. My draft had a nice dark brown color with a head that maintained throughout my mug. Nice malty aroma with minimal alcohol taste which differs from previous reviews. Perhaps because I had on draft? A smooth drinkable beer. Recommended.

Poured a dark amber color with a small, tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of toffee, citrus fruits, some oxidation, roasted and caramel malts. Taste of caramel malts, dried fruits, roasted notes, and a light citrus, grassy hop finish. Juice

03.06.05 Bomber bottle. Deep burgundy color with a soapy tan head fading to a ring of bubbles and wispy tan film. Vinous aromas, raisin, hints of chocolate, plum, lightly nutty, very nice. Flavors are mild, lightly roasty and nutty, more vinous, and grassy. Maybe some rye tasted? Maybe some concorde grape on nose? The ecclectic mix of hops makes for an interesting flavor profile while the varied malts blend for a good base, if thin. A very tasty brew and a nice surprise. I am also slightly congested with a bit of a cold today.

At last -- a Holiday Beer that can't be confused for a Christmas Ale...! ;^)
But seriously, I had no idea what I was getting with this one. I've had beers from this brewery before, sure, but none of them really left a lasting impression in my mind, to be honest. But in keeping with the spirit of the holidays -- and my natural inclination to always try something new and different -- I picked up a bomber of this during my most recent run to BevMo.
Good thing too -- since I think this is a pretty tasty Porter. And the fact that the alcohol is rather well-hidden means that goes down pretty nicely, too...
Solid marks in the appearence (dark, close-to-black, but not completely opaque), though I thought the aroma was a bit too subdued for my tastes.
But the flavor profile is where this beer really hits it's stride. Subtle coffee-ish notes even out the roasted barley-ish character, with additional nuance of perhaps some chocolate in the mix. So, while not a die-hard by-the-rulebook Porter, I think it works pretty well overall.
Nicely drinkable, too, with the aforementioned alcohol notes well-hidden beneath the appealing mouthfeel.
Overall, a pleasant but slightly underacheiving beer, from a brewery I think I should take a closer look at for 2005.
Recommended.

Pours with a dark brown body topped by a thin head with some lacing. It's slighty sweet and malty with a toasted nut note, some alcohol esters and note of caramel with a bitter finish. Full bodied, warming and full of carbonation.

Dark black brown color. Small to medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is malty, touch of bread, some fruit and some spice. A medium bodied American Strong Ale. Malts are fruity, nutty and sweet. Hops are bitter, spicy, grapefruity and a touch floral. The beer is a mix of 8 malts and 8 hop varieties. This usually results in a uninteresting mess of flavors. That is sort of going on here, but for some reason it sort of works here. Nice balanced. Touches of gingerbread. Its gotta be the best Chanukah beer Iíve ever tasted. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
Sampled on 2/16/2011. This American Strong Ale pours an eclipse black color from a 12oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head, with decent lacing and nice retention. The aroma is dark fruit, prunes and raisins, bready and sweet. The hops are grapefruity, herbal and earthy. Good carbonation. Decent balance. Lots of malts and lots of hops. Pretty much the same beer from 6 years ago, I don’t think the palate has changed that much since 2004. Although this beer hasn’t changed much, the fact that this kind of beer isn’t unusual sure has. Definitely glad I get to try it again. Thanks to the brewers for re inventing the series. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter -

Dark brown, smells like aged cheese, which isn’t necessarily bad. Very strong alcohol aftertaste, but the inital impression is nice, kind of spicy with some nutmeg and fennel...but it’s that aftertaste....
