Brewed at 7.5% ABV, with the original recipe first used on September 2, 1891, it is dark, rich and full flavoured, with a distinctly warming character. XX is deeply satisfying, and an unforgettable experience for those who love traditional English beer. The LCBO got a bunch of different Fuller's this Christmas, and this is one of them. Pours a clean amber colour with a big off-white head that stays a long time and creates nice soapy lace. I was expecting a sweet malt aroma, but some beautiful hop came out to caress my nose. Malt is present, but lightly roasted with hints of toffee and dark fruits. Medium-full bodied with some nice warming alcohol. The taste is constant mild bitterness with a touch of caramel and roasted malts, with a little burnt wood in the aftertaste. This is a pretty well-brewed English strong ale that I recommend as a winter warmer.

The beer poured a pale red colour, slightly hazed, with a generous tan head that disappeared quickly. The aroma consist of floral hops, caramel malt, and spices. Mouthfeel is creamy, full bodied, with medium carbonation. Flavour is sweet caramel notes, some vanilla, and a hint of hops. -

One of the 6 beers brought in as part of the Fuller's release at the LCBO. This was a very smooth drinking ESA with plenty of flavour. A lot of fruit and toffee notes abound in the flavour and aroma.

500 ml capped bottle. Poured a clear old copper or mid-brown coloured ale with a generous one finger light beige pillowy foamy head that had a very long retention and tons of bubbles. Active carbnation. Some lacing. The aromal is herbal hops, caramel malts, brown sugar, notes of red fruits. The flavour is sweety caramel malts, notes of spices, pepper, and a faint herbal hoppy bitterness. The mouthfeel is slight prickly, round, quite full with a midle warming, but noticeable, effect. This medium to full bodied ale has a dry slight bitter finish. I expected more from this E.S.A.

Bottled (thanks mjs!). Amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is floral and mildly fruity hops along with some mild honey and also rather sweet maltyness. Also has some notes of alcohol in the nose. Flavour is sweet malts along with a strong floral and semigrassy tone to it. Also has some mild alcohol and quite nice wooden notes. Rather bitter finish with also a bunch of malts to balance it up.

Pours out in a clear amber colour with a a small firm snow-white head. Red berries, marmalade, peppery alcohol and fudge. Medium-bodied with rich notes of prunes, over-riped oranges fudge and warming alcohol. Firm mouthfeel. Warming medium-bitter finish of peppery alcohol, grassy hops with sweetish undertones of oranges and red berries. Quite a nice sipper.

500 ml bottle conditioned, as Fuller’s Past Masters XX Strong Ale. This is the first beer in their Pasters Masters Heritage series. ABV is 7.5%. Clear amber colour, big to moderate head, slightly off-white. Moderate but nice aroma, notes of dark fruits and berries, also toffee. Fairly rich and slightly warming mouthfeel. The alcohol is not well hidden, but that doesn’t bother me much. Feels even stronger than it actually is, though. Rather sweet flavour, malts + dark fruits and berries again, distinct English hops in the finish and aftertaste. Well worth sampling.
