Brewer’s Reserve No.4 has spent over a year gently maturing in vintage Comte de Lauvia Armagnac casks, from the Bas region of France; the oldest Armagnac producing region. The black oak casks add a spirit-like edge to the beer, particularly on the nose, with a rich spicy flavour of prunes, orange peel, and cinnamon.

Sample from bottle at Copenhagen Beer Festival 2013. Brown colour, moderate off-white head. Distinct aroma of fruit cake and fortified/oaked wine The flavour is not too sweet (surprisingly dry, actually), and has distinct notes of armagnac oak barrel. Decent hops in the finish. Will buy again when I can get a whole bottle, I expect I will have no problem finishing it.

Got this from the LCBO a while back. Comes in a nice Fuller's box. Bottle No. 25926 with a seal over the cap. Pours a clean rich amber colour with a big frothy warm head, great retention and some foamy patch lacing. Lots of apples in the nose, with some butterscotch and light coffee. Flavours of raisins, watery caramel and hints of hops in the finish. Very mild sourness is felt in the aromas, and plums and molasses do appear with time. Armagnac is minimal but blends well with the beer. Not as complex as expected, but alcohol is well-hidden.

bottle # 30102 - pours a lightly hazed copper-red ale in the glass with a tight 2 finger cap which reduces to a surface lace. Pungent aroma is a glorious concoction of brandy grape skins, smoked oak and dark fruitiness from the ale and a sweet caramel malt tone. Medium bodied slick mouth feel. Flavour is simply a blast of brandied fruit riding on a sweet malt fomite - light undeveloped complexity in the mid palate will probably improve with some time in the cellar - finish is long and rich with the brandy/oak tones giving way to a more earthy malty fruitness of the ale. This is a powerful ale in nose and palate with substantial fusel strength - very good to sip with a cigar or dessert, but a few more months in the cellar will bring everything together well
