Formosa Springs Draft (pre 2012)

The Formosa brand has been around a while, unfortunately is was never that good, and now that it is in Brick's hands, it's not going to get any better. Again, not swill, but not too far above it.

Silver Medal at the 2006 World Beer Cup in the American-Style Premium Lager category. Bought this one in a 28 pack. Pours a pale golden colour with a small white head, not much retention and no lace at all. Carbonation is active, but not too crazy. The nose is pretty malty with hints of spices and apples. Typical watery mouthfeel of a lager. Some sweet malts, with some slight apples and a dry finish. Really not a bad brew, with no corn to be found, but nothing really exciting. Good decent swiller beer.

Stopped off at the Formosa spring Brewery in, Formosa Ontario, on the way to the beach. Anyway, back to the case of Formosa springs cold filtered draft I bought from the brewery outlet store: The nostalgia stubby bottles were placed in a tub of Ice at the beach and consumed to great delight by thirsty beer drinkers that hot sandy day. Was it like the great Formosa beers of the past?....no, not to my recollection (which is getting a tad foggy) but,...it was a good rendition of mellow draft lager beer with a unique fuller bodied character not available in the watery mega drafts. Poured a pleasing gold color with a small white frothy head that dissipated quickly. Hints of malt and nut like aromas,.... started smooth with a medium body and distinct malt and nut-like tastes some apple or pear tones, finished with a distinct lingering, not unpleasant biscuit taste on the tongue.... This is not a watery draft. I like it over all the bottled draft beers available. I don’t know what they mean by “cold filtered” but it produced a pleasing beer….a beer which has a mellow, smooth draft quality with out removing the beer’s character….part of which is the tasty malts used… If you like mellow unpretentious lagers, try this one, I think you'll like this unique beer.

This beer has been though three hands. First it was brewed by the Formosa Springs Brewery, which was swallowed up by Algonquin in the early 90's. Algonquin in turn was bought by Brick; this is the only Algonquin beer brewed by Brick, and ironically, it's the best thing they make. I poured this beer and came here to the computer and sat down for 10 minutes to write reviews and when I came back to the glass, there was still head! The taste is what you'd expect for the name-it tastes like draft beer,and is much better than Sleeman's offering, which I'd put second.
