Our commemorative ale honors Samson the elk, the unofficial mascot of Estes Park, who was killed by a poacher. This is a dark, rich oatmeal stout that's surprisingly easy to drink. We use Galena And Goldings hops to balance the sweetness. Samson Stout placed 3rd in the Oatmeal Stout category in the 2004 North American Beer Awards.

Sampled on 10/15/2012. This stout pours a dark black color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized tan foamy head. The aroma is chocolate and coffee, roasty and sweet. A medium bodied stout. The malts are roasty and sweet. The hops are herbal and earthy. Decent carbonation. A slightly sweet stout, with decent roasty malts. Slightly creamy. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly roasty and slightly bitter.

Smells and looks like a great stout. A sour stout, a rendition of the style that I do not appreciate. Can't get past the flavor, it really ruins it for me. Decent mouthfeel, but still, it doesn't taste good.

a very nice, perhaps underrated oatmeal stout. very dark and very smooth. full bodied and yet light. very flavorful, oats and chocolate, hints of coffee. one of my faves of the night.

It pours oil-black with a thin tan head and some lacing. An aroma of roasted malts, light coffee, Nesquik chocolate milk, citrus, bread and yeast, and a very mild spice component. The mouthfeel is smooth and very rich. Flavors of roasted malts, oats, chocolate, coffee, orange, bread and yeast, and mild spices. Excellent .. this is still my favorite style.

Black-brown, headless pour. Pleasant aroma of roasted malts with some faint chocolate and coffee notes. Flavor is decent, but overall this disappoints as a stout. Little body, no fizz, thin mouthfeel. Maybe an old or poorly capped boggle, I dunno, but there are many others to try before I revisit this one. That said, I'd like to try it in the condition Chef Chad found it... it could be somewhat more satisfying with all that head. And I do endorse the anti-poaching position of the brewery, and the donation of some of the beer sale's proceeds towards a program aimed at the apprehension and prosecution of illegal hunters.

Strong Roasted Coffee notes. Pours black with a massive thick tan head that has lasted for about 5 minutes now. Medium Body with ample Carbonation that is very pleasing that finishes very clean and smooth . Flavor is nice with good amount of coffee and sweetness. Some Chocolate on the finish.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark black with no head at all.

The aroma is roasted chocolate malts and coffee and a little sweet lactose.

The flavor is watery chocolate and coffee and a touch of smoke with a burnt finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied but extremely watery with no carbonation.

Overall, there are good components to this beer - it's very black, I like the chocolate and coffee in the taste and the smell, but the wateriness and lack of carbonation brings it down a ton. This beer shouldn't be ad either - I got it straight from the brewery less than a month ago.

Pours black with a thin dark tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate and smoky espresso. Flavor starts with sweet toffee and some milk chocolate, bitter roastedness follows, then becomes a bit watery and thin, with some roasted almond flavor. Lingering aftertaste of burnt coffee. Drinkable enough, but the watery mouthfeel really hurts this beer.
