Duchy Originals Old Ruby Ale 1905

Reddish/brown clear pour. Head is gone in less than ten seconds. Two dots of lace. Mild strawberry and malt aroma. Flavour is fruity and malt but again as in the aroma, very mild. Just a very blah beer all round.

Best before 30 April 2013. Nothing ruby about the pour, more of a cloudy dark orange under a meager offwhite head. At least it left a ring. Barely an aroma, maybe some hop. Flavour was citrus bitter (grapefruit?), almost sour. Okay mouthfeel. Subdued finish, might've been some malt in there.

The beer poured a translucent red colour, not quite ruby, with a thin white cap. The aroma was skunk, some nuttiness, and metallic tones. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour is gross. Some sweetness up front, and a lot of graininess and acidity in back.

Had hand pumped and from the bottle, will review bottle. Handpump would have scored higher. Surprisingly interesting considering this a beer that was brewed for a supermarket.... Smell is strong grapefruit, saskatoons, cherry jolly rancher, snoosberries (Willy Wonka), fuzzy peaches. Much more a sweet sour thing going on than a sweet/bitter. Maybe a wiff of sprite, but maybe that is from the intense carbonation (not to the beers complement at all). It is the candy beer! Interesting, glad to have once, it has promise, could be improved.

LCBO import. Seems like Duchy is the classier line for Wychwood. Pours a clean copper-amber colour with a frothy off-white head that has good retention and great lacing. Mildly carbonated with tiny bubbles. The aromas are light, with caramel malt and darker fruits like prunes. Very small notes of hop are present as well. The same are found in the taste. Again, very faint. Everything is good here, but lacking some bite. Note: Tried another one and seems better now (2013). Creamy beige head, long lasting, lots of lace. Weird how this one taste more as it is colder ?? Well-balanced between the grain and mild hop.

500mlBottle: Pours a copper-red ale in the glass small cap, weak retention, mild carbonation. Mild aromas of grains and fruits....very understated nose. Mild character boarders on weak/thin....limp character. Front side has some thin malting, takes a while to catch the fuggles which begins to dominate the back side of the profile...an interesting red berry fruit note pervades the entire profile....finish is lightly bitter clean but thin.. Decent ingredients but just not enough character to hold my interest.-
