This beer pours a reddish brown. It does not have much head but it does have a thin tan head. The aroma is heavy with nutmeg, cinnamon and pumpkin. The taste is heavy in nutmeg, with a little pumpkin aftertaste. Malts come through but this beer is really all about the spice and it works, not something to chug or drink a lot of but a great seasonal.

Pours out a dark orange brown color with zero head. The aroma is a mixture of pumpkin pie spices and malt. The mouthfeel is okay but just a notch above average. The taste is full of pumpkin spices . Not the best pumpkin beer but better than most.

Orange and almost clear, served headless. Aroma of cinnamon, lemon, clove, and pie spices. Flavor also includes cinnamon and sugar, a little lemon, and other pie spices. Pumpkin didn't really stand out against the spices. Wet but substantive.

Golden red pour with a thin head and fair amount of lace. Perhaps a bit too much spice and alcohol. The aroma was a bit underwhelming. So far Southern Tier's Pumpking is the standard.

Great aroma with a pleasantly intense spiciness... thanks, Lou. Pours deep, hazy reddish brown with a very slight head. Medium bodied and nicely full of flavor. Among the very best pumkins around.

In this case the 7 represents the fact that it is only a decent beer. The 9's represent how superior this beer is to the other pumpkin beers that I have tried. If you need context, I have had pumpkin beers from: Howe Sound, The Noble Pig, St. Ambroise, Brooklyn (Post Road), and maybe one more that I cant remember and didnt review.... This beer has spice, it is detectable. All the listed spices are present, nutmeg, cinamon and brown sugar (not technically a spice). In this beer the brown sugar does seem to act like a spice. Similair to when you add sugar to mango pulp, it brings up the sweetness, but highlights and brightens the other flavours. The sugar in this beer is the same, taking pumpkin from a heeavy savoury root vegetable and transforming it into a light, evervescent, beer flavour, which it should be. I would say that the spices on the brooklyn beer are similair, but the beer is mising the sugary lightness, and subsequent, highly quaffable nature of this brew. High fives! However, until someone does a imperial porter pumpkin brew with sugar and a belgian quadruple yeasty complexity, pumpkin beer will never be more than a seaonal bit of fun.

This was a spice bomb! I really liked this beer. I am generally a fan of DFH and this might be one of their best, especially if you like pumpkin pie. This beer smells of cinnamon, nutmeg, and holiday spices. The color is a golden/reddish hue. The flavor is of pumpkin pie at the aftertaste - the flavor generally lingers but is full throttle spice and cinnamon at the front. There are notes of hops and malt but the hops are drowned out by the spice profile. The mouth feel is full and the beer grabs the glass. Overall this is a tasty beer and a wonderful seasonal brew.

I am not too fond of pumpkin ales, but I love Dogfish Head, so decided to give this a try...especially since it's a little stronger at 7%. Was hoping it would be similar in style to their Aprihop, but this is more of a spiced brown ale. Appearance is a little lighter than most brown ales, maybe a lighter to medium brown with some orange hints from the pumpkin. Tastes of brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamin, pumpkin, all-spice, and malts.....pretty much is pumpkin pie in a bottle. With each sample from my 4-pack, I found it sweeter and sweeter until by the end, I just said "yeah, this is way too sweet for me". They probably could cut the brown sugar back a bit, but that is what they were aiming for I guess. A decent seasonal beer, but one of my least favorite DFH brews.

Sampled on 10/2/2009. This spiced ale pours a medium orange gold color from a 12oz bottle. Small to no head. The aroma is malty, fruity and a touch spicy. A medium to light bodied spiced ale. The malts are fruity and sweet. The hops are floral. Not a lot of pumpkin, not a lot of spices either. Not a whole lot of ANYTHING here. Some malt, some carbonation and perhaps something resembling pumpkin at the finish, but that’s about all. Maybe I need to try a different batch, because this one was a poor excuse for a pumpkin beer. There is nothing bad here, but there is no flavor either. Sorry DFH this one is a big fail. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Bottled. Amber colour, small head. Aroma is spices, hops and that’s about it. Flabvour is brown xmas cookies, some slight acidic fruityness as well as spices. As it warms up lots of pumpkin and spices, which also dominate the aftertaste. A very Christmassy beer, though not "made exclusively" for that season.
