Oerbier means original, from the source. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons) at home in a copper wash kettle, by two brothers who were students at the time. They took over an old brewery which was out of business and said: "If we don't bring the brewery back to life, nobody will!". It was also a unique opportunity to create some interesting brews, so why not try it? Therefore we went ahead. We did the main work ourselves and kept the scale of the brewery as it was. Since then, the brewery and its beers have been an inspiration for a lot of brewers. Oerbier is brewed from all different malts, Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C allowING Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it has been blended with wine… Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 9 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30.000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, continuing the tradition. Since 2000 as the yeast supply ceased, we installed a new yeast propagator. The tart aftertaste is obtained by lactobacterial fermentation (since 2005).

33CL Bottle at De Fiere Margriet. Neutral aroma ,with a hint of Liquorice (confectionery). light sourish taste. A great beer.

Pored an almost black color with light brown head. Sweet fruity caramel aroma. Sweet flavor that changed as it warmed to the room tempature around it. Fantastic all around beer.

Acquired via trade with Chopz. Bottle cap says bottled 2012. Pours a huge frothy beige head and has an extremely murky brown appearance. Lacing is kinda weak. Aromas of roasted barley malts, dried fruits (raisins, plums) and spices. Flavours are plentiful malty, dark roasted malt, chocolate, spices. Alcohol is quite evident and actually a bit overwhelming. 9% but maybe a bit more now. The finish is very dry and tastes very much like prunes or prune juice.

Imported through the SAQ. Pours a hazy copper-brown colour that gives out a red-orange glow. Huge beige head that is foamy, has very, very long retention with some bubbly lace. Aromas of sweet sugars, dark fruity malts, caramel and mild spices. Smooth and silky mouthfeel, almost creamy. Again, sweet tasting with some mild, but sharp hop bitterness that blends things well. Flavours of apples, butterscotch, dark fruits, notes of licorice, hints of cherries and with a tad of tartiness in the aftertaste. This brew has a beautiful sweetness to it that is not overkill, but very well-balanced with many fruits. Gets better as you drink it... slowly.

Ah...Numero 3000. One of the last beers that I brought back from Belgium this spring. Pours into my sniffer a dark, muddy brown. Nose is fo shizzle boozy as hell. Plentiful head. Never ending spritz with sweet caramel, date and fig notes. Taste is slightly too boozified for me. That's why it loses a couple points off the 8. It goes straight to the brain. A decent amount of yeast upfront lends to a certain spiciness that lingers long after the sip. If I would have planned ahead I would have maybe gone for a more special brew. But this was special enough for me. :)

The bottle gave me a start when it spat upon opening, but thankfully it didn’t fizz like a bottle of New Year’s champagne. It pours a dark cinnamon brown with a thick, fluffy and rather persistent light tan head. Strong, malty aroma has a firm overtone of sourish apple. Malty, fruity flavor has - WOW! quite an alcohol kick; it’s almost like vodka mixed with good cider. Still, the malty note and hint of hops that declare this to be beer come through. Smooth texture has good body and plenty of fizz, and yes, that alcohol bite.

The beer poured a medium dark brown with a huge tan head that was easily resurrected. The aroma was dark malt, sugar, apples, and toffee. The mouthfeel was light to medium bodied, with high carbonation. The flavour is sweet malt, caramel, licorice, and fruit.Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7
9% but the same label. dark fruit and yeastiness abound. the aroma is definitely more lactic than the flavor, but there is a slight presence in the flavor as well. not as spicy as some belgians, which is nice for a change of pace. this one was good, not great (like the special reseve).

Another example of a fine Belgian Ale. A dark red beer with brownish hints around the edges. Head is creamy, light brown, and lasts. The aroma is sweet caramel malt, dark malt, dark fruits, and yeast. The sweet maltiness and yeast dominate the taste before giving way to a bitter finish.
