The Wishart's ESB is in the tradition of old English Special bitters and would usually have more flavor, aroma and alcohol than a standard bitter. Our ESB is copper color and the nose is a blend of sweet caramel and fruity aromas. The flavour of this beer is complex. At first taste, sweet caramel and light toffees are overwhelming. As the flavor develops, a mix of fruity, spicy and citrus start to present themselves and eventually take over the sweeter flavors. The ESB is perfect to pair with traditional English foods such as fish and chips or bangers and mash.

Pint arrived with a thin layer of head, and has a reddish copper colour. Some carbonation. Good lacing. Malty aromas and flavours. Not much hops but it's still pretty noticeable in the aroma. Fairly smooth mouthfeel. Hints of cinnamon and some mild spices also in the flavour. Pretty good.

On tap at Byward Market in May ’09. OK at best light copper. Slight peach, ok aromatic hops, maybe too sweet? Not sure. Caramel. Tasty with solid hops, quite thick (which was a surprise), good fruit, some caramel, solid bitterness, very very drinkable but the thickness may be a touch to heavy after 6 of ’em. Near medium bodied, great carbonation, good malt middle, average bitter finish length. Best beer on tap with ease.

Poured from cask, colour is cloudy orangy/red with white head with good retention and lacing. For the flavor and aroma it's pretty much the same being on the flowery side. Mouthfeel is nice and smooth. Not bad at all, will try that one again next time.

Had this one from cask, as well (like their Bytown Brown). Poured a beautiful hazy golden-amber colour with a medium foamy head, which had great retention. The nose was fruity with hints of berries, like raspberries and strawberries (no, this isn't their raspberry wheat I am confused with). Medium sticky mouthfeel. Fruit was also found in the taste, like grapefruit. Good smooth bitterness in the finish and grainy bitterness lingered a while into the aftertaste. Nice bitter, good for session as well and went very well with the fries I had there.

Cask: Light brown beer with average head with minimum retention. Good floral aroma with some subtle sweetness. Taste is quite impressive with again great sweetness and ending with some dryness in the back of my mouth. This seems to enforce my suspicion that that bitter should only be drank from the cask and not bottle conditioned. I’m a bit surprise by the low rating of that one and wondered if the quality is really constant.
