Bolita was a type of lottery popular with the working class citizens of the Ybor City district of Tampa. Bolita means, "little ball" but profits from the illegal (and often rigged) game were anything but little. In the 1920's Tampa native Charlie Wall (center label donning the dapper hat) was the undisputed kingpin of the Bolita racket. Our Bolita is a Double Northern English-style brown ale that has a complex malt forward character with notes of chocolate, toffee and hints of roasted nuts in the finish. Bolita pairs well with Baklava, Big Band Music, Cool Evenings and robust cigars.

For such a strong beer (9%) this beer was quite smooth. Started sweet as most browns do and ended with a bitter/sour afterstaste. A deep brown in color, 1/8 inch frothy head that stuck around for a while.

Rating from 2008. Great name for this beer. Kudos tpd975. Pours deep dark brown with mocha head. The aroma is sweet with molasses and then moving to smooth roastiness. The taste is big with heavy oversized nuts, or nuttiness, moving toward rich roasted malts and a level or two of near burnt malts. This is thick and rich and bold with a cornucopia of malts coming in seamlessly from all directions with a mesa of hops that will not be ignored. Yummy imperial Brown Ale.

Pours out a murky brown color with a nice tan head. The aroma is a cross between wine and vinegar. The mouthfeel is okay not thin but not thick. The taste is interesting notes of leather and cigars very similar to the Cigar City Maduro.

A metallic tinge hit me immediately in both mouthfeel and flavor. Not forceful enough to off put me, but was noticeable enough to detract. Medium bodied brown, no trace of alcohol yet not hearty enough to captivate me. Good malt profile with an influence of English malts and mild earthy hops. Didn't get overly excited about this after my initial sip.

bolita brown is the red headed stepchild of lion stout and dfh palo santo. expecting a brown ale, this would be an odd one. it's thick, strong, and well...thick. dense head atop a beer that looks like a big stout. huge roasted malt and chocolate and toffee...sweet, but not overbearing. a wonderful sipper on a cool night.

750 ml bottle, kindly shared by abemorsten. ABV is 9%. Dark brown colour, nearly black. Moderate beige head. Nutty, malty and moderately roasty aroma and flavour, fairly sweet, rich mouthfeel.

A beautiful murky brown colored beer with hints of ruby when held up to a light. A big creamy textured, light tan head rises above. And that head sticks around for awhile. Thick creamy rinlet and splotches of film are eventually left behind. A sweet, molasses, nuts and roastiness rise to the nose. Full bodied. Alcohol presence throughout. Big on the brown sugar and molasses, burnt on the tongue. This really is an impressively crafted beer.

Bottled@The Chriso Gaylord Tasting. Deep orangeish brown colour, mediumsized brown head. Aroma is funkyness, caramel, some wood as well as spices. Flavour is quite much the same in a nice balance. Quite interesting and rather different brew.

Another solid brew from Cigar City. I don't know exactly what it is, but they all have the same certain flavor in the backround that I can't quite pinpoint. Maybe oak barrels that they use? I noticed it in their Humidor Ale, Improvicion Oatmeal Rye Indian Brown, and this one (not so much the Guava Grove). This tasted similar to the Improvicion, but I didn't like it as much. Was a little less hoppy, had more sweet malty flavors, but the balance totally worked. I am still not finding Cigar City's beers quite worth the price that they are charging, but am glad to support a local brewery and understand that this is a "luxury brew". Eager to try some of the others, especially the 110k IPS that I missed out on couple months ago.

Shared this bottle with Crown (nice to get him rating again!) Deep brown color and pours with a real nice frothy tan head. This is overall rather roasty, with nuts, chocolate, and caramel blending together quite nicely to give this a rich flavor while still being extremely easy drinking. I would have never thought this was 9% without knowing ahead of time. Any sort of note of alcohol shows in the finish with a little kick. A wonderful strong Brown Ale and I look forward to the treatments and blends of this beer Cigar City is distributing.
