A Brown Ale, much in the line of of Scotch Ales, but also quite reminisent of New Castle Brown Ale.

Bottled (had in 2008, tnx mabjork). Rubyish brown colour, small off-white head. Aroma is roasted malts, some nuttyness, mild earth, wooden notes as well as some slight syrupy notes. Flavour is quite similar, but also has some slight raisiny and mild plummy notes.

More like a sweet stout to me. It is a little heavy, although the quality came down after FEMSA bought it. It is nice to drink and you cna easily desire another one. Good foam and nice malty aroma.

Reddish brown., small bubbly head. Clean aroma of nuts, roasted malt and caramel. Nice malty flavour of chocolate, figs and nuts. Long, clean malty aftertaste.

Poors a nice brown with more head than I was expecting (spilled some < hanging head in shame >) Decent lacing. Awesome bottle and lable, though. Smells mostly of malt. Taste is okay. Some carmel but mostly malt. I don't detect any hops. It's a bit unbalanced, IMO. Mouthfeel is better than average. It's about right for style. Drinkability is good. Nothing exceptional, but I could enjoy several of these. Bottom line: I'm impressed for a Mexican beer, and it's definately better than anything else I've had from the country (this brand excepted), but nothing exceptional. If you haven't tried this beer, though, do give it a shot.

Brewtopia’04. Smells of caramel, sweet and lovely and nutty. Brown sugar and caramel malty. Noble hops add a nice zing to finish. Another pleasant surprise from Casta.

A nice creamy off-white head floats atop a bloodied brown body. The aroma is nicely malty and the flavor is like chocolate covered cherries, heavy on the chocolate and light on the cherries (and without any sourness). Underneath the chocolatey malt and fruitiness lurks the crisp pale malt liek the dominate malt flavor in Anchor Liberty. The carbonation makes for both a fibrous and fiery mouthfeel.

Nice ruddy color to this beer with a nondescript head. Heavy malt in the nose with little else present. A definite prune/raisin component to the beer mixes with the malt to leave a finish a bit like raisin bread. Very drinkable and pleasant - just too expensive. Not willing to pay such a premium for a "good" beer from Mexico just because it's from Mexico.

A really solid example of a scottish in my opinion. Big malty profile with a hint of smokiness. Not to sweet. Medium bodied.

Ok, first things first here. Yes, it's a Mexican microbrewery. And yes, it's a Mexican microbrewery doing a Scottish ale. Ok? Everybody comfortable with how unlikely and off-the-wall that all sounds? Good. Let's move on to the beer itself.

My first impression was something along the lines of, "If Michelob Dark was done Scottish-style, it might turn out to be something like this..." But all fairness, that's really not entirely true. This has something of a personality, and perhaps hints of a soul. But with the body a bit on the thin side, and aroma a bit lacking (yes, I did let it warm up a bit for this), I found it harder and harder to really care one way or the other about this beer. I recognize the craftmanship, and the pure cojones to put out a microbrew in the macroswill world of Mexico, but when all is said and done, this beer really has very little to say for itself. So, therefore, I too will speak no further on this matter.

Dark Brown color. Medium head. Aroma is malty and slightly sweet. A medium bodied Scottish ale. Malts are roasted, slightly smoky with a touch of lingering sweetness. Mild hoppyness, touch of sweetness. Mostly taste the sweetness. Nice beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
