This year’s Stumptown Tart gathers 15-pounds of Oregon marionberries, raspberries and strawberries from local growers at Willamette Valley Fruit Company for each barrel of this tasty warm weather favorite. To give a different twist to the base beer, Brewmaster Jeff Edgerton used a new malt from Great Western Malt called “Superior Pilsen”. The team is also using wheat malt for some mouthfeel, a slight permanent haze and a lighter color that should serve to accentuate any pinks and reds extracted from the berries. In addition, one-third of the base beer will be fermented with “Ardennes” Belgian yeast to give a light Belgian character and add to the complexity of the profile.

Sampled on 10/1/2012. This fruit beer pours a slightly hazy strawberry color from a 22oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity, strawberry and raspberry. Slightly tart. A medium to light bodied fruit beer. The malts are fruity and sweet, mostly strawberry, but the raspberries and marionberries are there as well. The hops are floral and spicy. Lively carbonation. Nice fruity flavors, they are a little more subdued than I would like, but the berry flavors are there without being overpowering. I kind of like the tartness. Light and refreshing. Interesting combination of fruit. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly tart.

Aroma has a strong fruity overtone with notes of strawberry and raspberry - and that must be marionberry. It pours a slightly hazy coppery amber with a fairly thick pale tan head that leaves some good lacing. Flavor has a malty core and a strong berry overtone, notes of sweetness and tartness, even a hint of woody hops. Texture has decent body and a sharp fizz that leaves a nice tingly berry finish. Pick this one!
