Beerpal Note: This beer was originally launched under the name of "Speedball" in 2008, playing off of the presence of both a stimulant and depressent in the beer. For the second and ensuing campaigns, the brewery modified the name to avoid further public scrutiny and potential misconceptions around their support of responsible drinking. - - - - - A class A strong ale brewed with guarana, Californian poppy, kola nut and Scottish heather honey. A conspiracy of trans-continental ingredients infused with some devastatinglynBrewDog imaginative thinking. An up-down, happy-sad, hello-goodbye conundrum which is determined to challenge perceptions and push boundaries. This light chestnut, slow motion rollercoaster of a beer perfectly balances out a vicious cocktail of active ingredients, who said equilibrium has to be boring? Combined in the bottle are the natural stimulants guarana and kola nuts with natural depressants Californian poppy and hops, all blurred together by the audacity of Scottish heather honey. It would be a shame to ruin all this hard-work with additives, preservatives or pasteurization, so, as always at BrewDog, we don't waste our time.

interesting spiced ale, kind of in a class of it's own, though the clover honey is the main player in the aroma and flavor. i'm assuming the other aroma and flavor is larely kola nut, and you get a nice malt bse and a touch of hops as well. the originally very pleasing aroma and flavor grew a little tiresome as the beer reached room temp. very nice as a sampler, decent as a whole brew.

8.5% ABV:- Took a little while getting used to, but all in all a solid beer. Not sure if it's the nuts, guarana, or spices.. but had a slight minty feel sorta like a mild mint tea. Cloudy dark orange to brownish/amber appearance. Seems somewhat unfiltered, but has that smooth mouthfeel. Interesting to try, but one of those that I could skip over in the future.

Pours out in a clear amber colour with a rich fluffy snow-white foam. Fresch and rounded aroma of hay, minerals, wet grass, honey and heather with hints of caramel and flowers. Medium-bodied with strong notes of heather, flowers and caramel with hints of salty licorice and grass. Firm mouthfeel. Long firm yet rounded finish of heather, honey and salty licorice. Quite a funny experience.

Nov. 2009 - "Dogma" label. "Thanks" to eaglefan538 for sharing...even though I’m starting to wonder why he keeps "making" me drink these weirdly spiced beers. This one had a really funky nutty flavor...must have been the kola not. Lots of honey, but really anything else going on was a mere sideshow for the kola nuts. I’m not a fan of kola nuts.

Bottle: Poured a slightly hazy color amber ale with a medium foamy head with average retention and not much lacing. Aroma of weird and not common spice mix is quiet particular. Taste is also quite particular with some weird spices which I am not particularly fond of. Body is about average with average carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Weird spices and not something I would wish to try again necessarily.

Sampled on 1/8/2010. This spiced ale pours a medium amber copper color from a 55cl bottle. Medium to small sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, cola, honey and sweet. A medium bodied spiced ale. The malts are caramel and sweet. The hops are citrusy. Interesting blend of flavors. I didn’t notice the poppy seeds or the guarana that much, but the honey and kola nuts are evident. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Smells fantastic right out of the gate with a mix of not so common scents. I picked up on the heather and honey as well as a subtle nutty aroma. Pours a clear amber with a medium sized light tan head and good lacing. Flavor is very muted compared to the wild aroma. Bread and nuts with some caramel and a jumble of herbs and spices. Tastes decent, but it became rather thin and just seemed underdeveloped in the flavor and mouth feel departments.

330 ml bottle, as BrewDog Speedball, at Olympen, Oslo. I think the ABV was 7.8%. Deep amber to reddish colour, moderate head. Distinct aroma of American hops, and some honey. The flavour is first distinctly hoppy and rather bitter, then the flavour is mellowed when the malts and the special ingredients come through (guarana, kola nuts and heather honey - I can’t identify the Californian poppy), as the beer warms up a little. All in all a pleasant mouthfeel and an enjoyable beer.
