Blue Point Brewing's "Old Howling Bastard" named after an infamous local character, this strong ale has plenty of character all its own. Made with English 2 row barley and Vienna malt. Reaching an alcohol content of 10% barleywine should be consumed in moderation. Strong malty caramel flavors balanced by lots and lots of hops. Try this in a snifter or wineglass. The trick is to never forget that after a few glasses you may become the "Old Howling Bastard

Tasting at Rockwell Tavern. This confirms again, not too fond on Barley Wines. Opaque orange, off-white foam. Alcohol content, light sour taste. (Houston 201501)

This poured an amber color with a white head. The aroma contains lots of citrus notes like lemons with some caramel and toffee notes. The flavor is a bit boozy backed up with a ton of hops. There is a malt character hanging around. This is almost like a 50/50 American and English Barleywine split. Overall a little confused but drinkable.

Comes out of the tap a barely translucent reddish brown; not much head, but that may be an artifact of the pour. Aroma is sweet and fruity, mainly apple, with a malty undertone. Flavor has woody, malty and fruity notes and quite the alcoholic bite - not for the faint of heart! Firm, smooth texture has plenty of fizz and an alcoholic edge. Let this bastard howl for you!

Bottled@Akkurat, Stockholm (thanks to BK for helping me out drinking this one). Deep ambery red colour with big off-white head that leaves some lace. Aroma is fruits, wood, caramel malts, mild bready notes as well as some zesty notes and a bit of alcohol as well. Flavour is being quite much the same, but the alcohol is burning a bit too much.

A bright amber colored beer with a huge creamy textured, white head. Fantastic hang time, settling eventually into an impressive thich ringlet and cap atop the body and thick film aside the glass. Gentle caramel notes on the nose. It is thus surprising when tasted. The flavors are far bolder, citric, caramel, spice and fruit all dance so beautifully crafted together. The body is fill and slick on the palate. It turns out to be a real treat.

I've drank much better barley wines than this example. I've enjoyed beverages from Blue Point in the past but feel they failed in this attempt. Hoppy like most barley's but with a weird taste. Agree with the carmel taste review. Drinkable but have had better.

12.10.05 2000, 750ml bottle secured beneath the thickest and meanest sheath of red wax armor you’ve ever seen. I believe Rich had to bust out some brothas with pliers and blowtorches to dig through the stuff. Anyway, the pour was an orangey deep copper with slight white ring of foam. Aroma is yeasty (biscuit dough) and plenty oxidized (sherry, cardboard). Oxidation carries into flavor with lots of vinous notes, sherry, raisin, and dark caramel. Not much left of the hops save a background note of springtime flowering fields. Nice stuff, I’d love to try a fresh sample.

2000... Poured a hazy amber color with a thin, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus fruits, sherry, sweet malts, some wine-like characteristics, and alcohol as well. Taste was much of the same, but with a bit of cardboard. Perhaps this one is past its peak.

well this was different. A cask sample and actually this was the one beer i 86'd at Brewtopia 2005. Too bad. Tasted like unsweetened caramel, if thats such a thing, which its not, so it was weird...... Alcohol was fine inside a full syrupy body with some roasted nut and raw grain. Rich malty but not too sweet. A conditioned taste and fairly complex. Broad finish was looking for some ballast. Tan color. Barleywines can be so different and this wasn't quite up my alley.
re-Review on a bottle vintage '03, easily aged plenty enough over 4 years, this is very mellow, None alcohol bite, i like it much better now, a lot of sweaty grains, not sweet, and big red pepper like spice finish. More of an english style BW, earthy forest tastes, rotting oak (good), light on the hops, and a ton of feremented grains. This is good, complex and developed, i like it now and a drunken thumbs up -
