First brewed in England around 1800, for export to the British population of India, IPA was generously hopped as a preservative for the long sea voyage from Britain. Combining both British and Northwest brewing techniques, Bitter Root Brewing's IPA is light in color, high in hops, with a rich malt flavor.

Perhaps the best of the brews I've tried from Bitter Root but probably because I am biased toward IPAs. However, it still falls short of what I like in an IPA. There just isn't enough hoppiness here to make it stand out.

From growler, 06/03. Pours opaque orange/gold, average sized though brainy head. There seems to be little aroma at all to this beer - some white sugar, wet looseleaf paper, pine trees in summer. The flavor smacks of pine, grapefruit, simple syrup. Slightly cloying maltiness from middle to back is hiding an underlying earthiness and taking the edge off the hops. Not a spectacular beer, maybe better from the tap or a bomber.
