Beau’s is proud to present the most recent evolution in a style of beer we call the Eastern Ontario Gruit. The Bog•Father is an intensified and hopped version of Bog•Water, our popular winter seasonal. History & Style In medieval Europe, many herbs and spices were used to flavour and preserve beer. This hop-less style of beer was known as Gruit. Bog myrtle (sweet gale) was one of the most widely used herbs, and in parts of Europe its use was so commonplace used that you could even pay your taxes with it! Unfortunately, after the introduction of the Bavarian Purity Act of 1516, these Gruit ales became nearly extinct. Bog•Father is a modern (and hopped) twist on an ancient ale. Tasting Notes Intense flavours and aromatics of raisin, hazelnut, herbal bitters, burnt toast, pisang goreng, cola, bubblegum and licorice are achieved through the alchemy of dark malts, Belgian trappist ale yeast, and bogmyrtle hand-picked from the wilderness. Pours a lot of foamy tan head and dissipates to a half inch thick coating. Somewhat weak lacing. Has a dark brown/coppery appearance. Sweet malts and toffee aromas as well as earthy and spiced hops. Flavours are of barley matls, yeast, raisins, more dark fruits with notes of caramel, nuts and toast. Smooth creamy/velvety mouthfeel. Slight warming sensation. Full bodied. With a stronger abv, enjoyed more than the regular "Bog Water".

2013 version which is 8.5% ABV. at the Arrow & Loon. Pours a murky brown colour. Did not have any head (not sure if it was the bar pour) and so no lacing was found. Medicinal nose with mild fresh mint aromas (in a very good way). Medium-heavy bodied. Very interesting taste with licorice notes, hints of dark fruits and a herbal finish. This is a very lovely original brew for those who wants something different and love grassy roots. I would definitely have again and suggest you try this.
