Brewers of Alt Beer in Düsseldorf will occasionally, and secretly, brew a special, extra malty, extra hoppy version of their beer and only announce it the day before its release. It’s known as ‘sticke’ – German slang for ‘secret’ BEAU'S ALL NATURAL BREWING CO. executed an Ontario version of this event Thursday, September 9, 2010 by secretly releasing an amped up version of FESTIVALE – our summer seasonal beer which recently won a GOLD medal at Mondial de la Biere in Strasbourg, France. FESTIVALE PLUS is brewed with lots of extra malts, lots of extra hops – including a first wort hopping, and aged extra-long on oak. FESTIVALE PLUS was made available in a limited amount at the brewery and select restaurants and bars — the brewery as well and the majority of places did sell out in one day, in keeping with the ‘sticke’ tradition. The Kingston Brewing Co. was first to let us know their supply had run dry (4:08 pm), and we heard from numerous sources over the rest of the day and evening as each of the places finished their keg. We even got a panicked phone call 10 minutes before the brewery’s 6 pm close asking us to stay open so a customer could get there in time to buy two jugs of the Sticke... but when he arrived and saw the final six jug on the shelf and bought ‘em all,— making Sticke a total success! Our thanks to the following for participating in our Ontario Sticke experiment... "As Beau's continues to grow, we get to have more and more fun.” says Steve Beauchesne of BEAU’S All Natural Brewing Company, ”This is a great example of a crazy idea come to life." Keep your ear to the ground next summer for news of the next Beau’s Sticke Altbier batch, to be released on ... well, if we told you, it wouldn’t be a secret, would it?

Pours a large frothy, brownish head and has a clean amber/copper appearance. Thick lacing. Huge bready and toasty malt aromas with a bit of resin hops. Sort of a wood/oak smokey flavour. Some toasty and nutty malts with notes of breads and mild herbal hops. Slight spicy undertones and even a bit of the barley coming through. Warming sensation and mild astringent and tingling mouthfeel. Full bodied. Pretty good and easy to drink. Goes down pretty smooth.

The beer poured a translucent copper red colour with a thin tan coloured cap. The aroma was malt, caramel, fruits, floral hops, and spices. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour was sweet grains, some caramel, yeast, and a hoppy finish. The best Altbier I've had to date. -

Nice ! Another Wild Oats (revisited) single bottle at the LCBO. Pours a rich deep amber colour with a frothy-foamy, yellow-beige head, with great retention and bubbly lace. Mild fruity malt aromas with a little toastiness and hints of other dark fruits. The hop comes out in the taste, very well-balancing things with the malt (fruitiness) and the nice bitterness. Real glad they re-released this one, as it is quite good, goes down real nicely and has great character that do not offend.

Bottle – Pours a deep brown-ruby ale in the glass 2 finger off white puffy cap lasts. Gorgeous aroma of roasty grains, cocoa and filbert nuts. Medium bodied, rich slick mouth feel. Flavour profile has big roasty-nutty malts in th front then a decent balance from German noble hops as the brew slides into the finish the roasty-cocoa-nut flavours intensify to a hoppy terminus. Rich, robust and satisfying Alt. I like this one a lot.
