Maverick & Gose is a Leipziger Gose Beer that has been aged in Ontario Chardonnay barrels for 4 months prior to packaging. A rare German brew of medieval origin, this 2012 Canadian Brewing Awards Silver Medalist beer is brewed with a mostly malted wheat base, pink Himalayan salt, and spices. Notes of lemon, herbs and a slight saltiness make this collaboration truly unique to Ontario.

650ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a fairly large frothy and bubbly white head that sticks around long enough. Has a clear golden appearance. Slightly excessive carbonation. Aromas of yeast, wheats, grassy, citrus and lemon. Flavours are mostly on the citrus and bitter side, some tarty notes. Also some lemony notes, a bit tangy, grassy hops. Good retention. Drying mouthfeel with a hint of sourness. Not too bad.

500 ml bottle pours a cloudy straw colored beer in the glass with a frothy white cap that lasts. Aroma is interesting – I get spices, dry biscuity malts, lemon grass, saline, coriander and some funk. Firm bodied yet light and dry in front, peppery mouth feel. Flavor is biscuit dough and spice with a hint of citrus and celery then a dry finish where salt and hops show up – really interesting profile. Pretty good stab at a Leipzig Gose however I feel barrel= aging is wasted on this style.

The beer pours a hazed golden yellow with a long lasting white head. Aroma is wheat, spices, and citrus. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The first and last thing you taste is salt, although there are peppery and citrus notes as well.
