Aroma of sweet malts, caramel, peat smoke and over-ripe red berries, also vinous notes with hints of oak. The flavour has loads of malty sweetness and caramel, peat and oak, with a distinct hoppy bitterness in the finish and aftertaste.

The aroma is first surprisingly moderate, some roasty notes, mild coffee, hints of chocolate and liquorice. Improves as the beer warms up a little. Rich and warming mouthfeel. The flavour is roasty, malty and fairly sweet, notes of sweetened strong coffee, dark bitter chocolate and English liquorice, with a pronounced hoppy bitterness throughout. Alcohol is noticeable. Bitter aftertaste. A couple years in the cellar might be a good idea.

The flavour is definitely hoppy, but less so than most American IPAs. Some sweetness, the alcohol is noticeable. Notes of spruce again, moderate bitterness in the aftertaste.

Lovely vinous aroma, notes of red berries and dark fruits, hints of vanilla, spices, leather and oak. Soft and warming mouthfeel. The flavour has moderately sweet malts (not much roastiness), chocolate and dark fruits, moderate bitterness, hints of spices and liquorice in the finish. A soothing beer indeed.

The flavour is moderately roasty with notes of chocolate, mild coffee, vanilla and oak, hints of caramel and liquorice. Medium sweet, moderate bitterness. Far from the heaviest imperial stout I’ve had, but nice and drinkable.

The flavour is sweet with strong notes of banana, yeast, spices and chamomile. Powerful and warming mouthfeel. I admit being sceptical to a wheat beer this strong, but Good Force is actually .... well, GOOD. You’ll need an ability to handle a certain amount of sweetness, though.

500 ml green bottle, as Jennings Cumberland Ale, from MENY Stadionparken, Stavanger. ABV is 4,7%. Deep golden colour, moderate white head. Moderate aroma of "dusty" hops, hints of toffee. Fairly refreshing flavour, dry hops on a background of subtle malts and a hint of fruit. Bitter aftertaste with some unpleasant metallic notes. Cask half pint, at The Lamplighter, St. Helier. Copper colour, white head. Moderate aroma. Malty flavour, with sharpish and slightly metallic hops in the finish.

Fairly fresh and nice aroma of sweetish pilsener malts and grassy and herbal Hallertauer hops. The flavour has a moderate fruity sweetness and tolerable hops throughout. Not exceptional in any way, but much better than I feared.

330 ml bottle, a gift. ABV is 5.8%. Very dark brown colour, nearly black. Moderate beige head. Moderate aroma of dark malts, hints of chocolate and mild coffee. Light bodied, thin mouthfeel for its strength. Lacks the full and creamy mouthfeel of a good stout. The flavour is quite dry, notes of roasted malts and thin coffee. The dusty bitterness in the finish is too moderate. Drinkable of course, but very far from the most impressive stouts I’ve had.

330 ml bottle, a gift. ABV is 5.8%. This might be the first beer I’ve had with angelica as one of the ingredients. (In the Nordic countries, this herb was not uncommon as a flavour ingredient in farmhouse beer and spirits in the olden days.) Hazy pale golden colour, big white head. Interesting and pleasant aroma of herbs, spices and Belgian ale yeast. Light bodied. Fairly dry flavour with moderate notes of herbs and spices, but the mouthfeel is too thin. Slightly fruity / acidic finish, very moderate bitterness. Could have been better, but well worth sampling.

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Cloudy orange-golden colour, moderate white head. Pleasant sweetish wheaty aroma with distinct notes of oranges. The flavour has also notes of oranges, coriander is less prominent. Noticeable hops in a moderately bitter finish. Not too sweet. A quite enjoyable brew.

The flavour is fairly malty with hints of caramel, notes of grassy and herbal hops again. Spritzy mouthfeel. A decent Märzen this one.

Strong sweetish aroma of candy, syrup, Belgian ale yeast and chili, hints of honey. The flavour has sweet notes of malts and Belgian ale yeast, hints of honey and syrup, minimal hops. Not much chili flavour while the beer is in your mouth, but there’s a distinct chili burn in the aftertaste. A bit weird, but well worth sampling.

500 ml bottle, from Rewe Getränkemarkt, Erding. ABV is 5.1%. Deep copper brown colour, big to moderate off-white head. Aroma of bakery (brown bread and pastry) and caramel malts, also some moderate fruity notes. The flavour is malty with caramel, but not too sweet, some lightly burnt notes and moderate hops in the finish. Well balanced and pleasant to drink. According to Roger Protz, this is one of the 300 beers you need to sample before you die. I would not limit myself to 300 beers, but König Ludwig Dunkel is definitely worth sampling (and having again the day after), as a fine example of Bavarian dunkels - a style that most of the time does not get the love it deserves on beer rating websites.

Strong typical hefeweizen aroma of yeast, ripe bananas / banana candy and cloves. Spritzy mouthfeel. Refreshing flavour, banana and cloves again, hints of citrus, not too sweet. Minimal hops. Easy drinking.

The flavour has some malty sweetness and moderate German hops in the finish - nothing remarkable here, but still a fairly well made and drinkable beer.

The flavour is all American hops throughout, with a very pronounced bitterness in the finish - 45 IBU sounds not shockingly high, but with a beer this thin, it is. The aftertaste is too bitter and medicinal.

Also notes of crystal or caramel malts. The flavour has loads of piney hops throughout, with a substantial bitterness, on a fairly sweet malty background. Hints of tomcat. Not "well balanced", but what do you expect from an imperial IPA?

Easy drinking, not a great beer, but nice enough.

Strong typical hefeweizen aroma of banana and cloves, also other undefined spices. The flavour has moderate notes of banana and stronger notes of cloves / other spices, but is drier than many other hefeweizens, and the moderate hops in the finish are actually noticeable. A bit too much carbonation in the mouth for my taste, but otherwise a nice h.w.

500 ml swingtop bottle, bought at Rewe Getränkemarkt, Erding. ABV is 5.4%. Crystal clear (filtered?) pale yellow colour, big to moderate white head. Very moderate carbonation in the glass and mouth. Aroma of grassy hops. The flavour has some malty sweetness, some grassiness and a substantial hoppy bitterness, while the alcohol shows an unexpected presence for a 5.4% beer. God knows what makes this a Landbier - it looks and tastes more like a filtered Dortmunder Export to me. Anyway, drinkable it is.

The flavour is moderately malty with notes of caramel and brown bread, but it is not too sweet. Just enough hops to make this a fairly well-balanced and drinkable dunkel.
