4576 Holbæk Fjord Beer Denmark Blonde Ale 2.6

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

500 ml bottle, thanks to Tom. ABV is 3.5%. Pale golden colour, big to moderate white head. Smells like an industrial pale lager, some grassy hops, hints of honey, metallic notes. The flavour is somewhat better than the aroma, light bodied of course, but there are fairly decent hops thoughout. Bitter and slightly metallic aftertaste.

4577 Ægir Saison Norway Saison 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Cloudy brownish golden colour, moderate white head. Very nice aroma of spicy and fruity Belgian saison yeast, sweetish malts and fruity hops. The flavour is moderately sweet with fruity and spicy notes, and with a distinct hoppy bitterness in the finish. A bitter "bite" remains throughout the long aftertaste.

330 ml bottle, bought in Denmark. Amber coloured Christmas brew of moderate strength. Malty aroma and flavour, some caramel, fairly good beer, but not outstanding.

4579 Carlsberg Carls Lager Denmark Vienna / Amber Lager 3.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Bottles, bought in Denmark. Historically interesting recipe, but this is not a beer I'd choose for daily consumption. Rerate: I generally like Münchener dunkels (which is what Carls Lager is supposed to be), but this one is too bland, despite some caramel in aroma and flavour. Would profit on a higher ABV.

4580 Carlsberg Carls Påske Denmark Vienna / Amber Lager 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Bottles, bought in Denmark. An acceptable reddish amber Easter brew, some caramel in aroma and flavour. Rerate: Fairly bland beer compared to the stronger Carlsberg Påskebryg 1847.

4581 Carlsberg Crown Denmark Strong Lager 2.7

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Bottle, bought in Denmark. "Danish malts, GLUCOSE SYRUP, Tasmanian hops" .... hmmm. Carlsberg’s attempt to make a beer with champagne-like qualities ... hmmm - I’m not a big fan of real champagne (price considered), but I’d definitely prefer real champagne for a celebration, if Carlsberg Crown were the best beer on offer. Fruity but not very strong aroma, bubbly/fizzy fruity flavour, not offensive but far from interesting. Alcohol is well hidden (behind what??). I am not a monarchist, but I think the happy couple deserved something better than this.

4582 Carlsberg Light Denmark Reduced Alcohol 1.9

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 4

Typical "light" (which in Denmark and Norway previously always meant "low alcohol") beer. Little more to add. A 2.5% version was made for Norway. Golden colour, moderate head. A very watered down pale lager, but with some malt and very moderate hops in aroma and flavour, not totally undrinkable when you have to drive afterwards.

4583 Carlsberg Master Brew Denmark Strong Lager 2.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

Bottle, bought in Denmark. Golden colour. Way too much alcohol for any body this brew might have. Sweetish aroma dominated by alcohol. Sweet and alcoholic flavour, not a beer for me.

4584 Carlsberg Capo Denmark Fruit Beer 2.3

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

Bottle, bought in Denmark. Looks like a pale raspberry soda. Strong initial carconation, but hardly any head. Very light fruity aroma, light bodied despite the high ABV, refreshing but no real substance or aftertaste. No, Carlsberg - this is not what the world needs. Let's have Wiibroe Imperial Stout Porter* back, you m******f*****s (*which we eventually had).

4585 Carlsberg Påskebryg 1847 Denmark Doppelbock 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Botle, bought in Denmark. You really feel the power of spring (or resurrection, if you're religious) in this strong Easter brew. Sweet, but still well balanced. One of Carlsberg's better products.

4586 Carlsberg Pivo Denmark Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 3.1

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Bottle, bought in Denmark. Golden pils, moderate head. Good Saaz aroma. Light bodied, but decent bitterness in the aftertaste. An ABV of 5% would be more appropriate. The Czechs do it better, but all in all this is not a bad try of Carlsberg. A beer for the summer days.

4588 Ribe Jubilæums Ale Denmark Spiced Beer 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Bottle, kindly shared by my beerpal Jan Magnus. ABV is 6.0%. In addition to barley malts and hops it is brewed with rye malts, wormwood, juniper berries, rowan berries and liquorice root. Deep golden colour, moderate white head. Moderate aroma of caramel with some unusual spicy and herbal notes, hints of berries. Fairly dry flavour, moderate notes of spices and rowanberries. Decent beer, but with all these interesting ingredients I kind of expected a stronger herbal "punch" in the flavour.

4589 HaandBryggeriet Merry NewYear (2008) Denmark English Barleywine 4.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

500 ml bottle, UK style barleywine, vintage 2008, kindly shared by my beerpal Christian. ABV is 10.6%. Beautiful ruby colour, big off-white to beige head. Strong vinous and oaky aroma, notes of dark dried fruits and caramel. Sweet flavour but not extreme, notes of dark dried fruits and oak again, hoppy bitterness in the finish. A good beer from the (now sadly defunct) Danish HaandBryggeriet.

Moderate beige head. Lovely aroma of dark dried fruits (incl. raisins), oak, dark malts, vinous notes. The flavour has much the same elements as the aroma, with tolerable hops in the finish.

4595 Kinn Pilegrim Norway Bitter 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

750 ml capped bottle, courtesy of the brewer. ABV is 4.7%. The glass fills completely by white foam, and the golden beer appears only slowly. When the head eventually is low enough to make the beer drinkable from my tall glass, the remaining carbonation is very moderate. I think the refermentation in the bottle has gone a bit "bananas" here, seems not right for an English style bitter. Quite nice aroma of Fuggles and Centennial hops, notes of blackcurrants, hints of butterscotch and honey. The flavour has a decent hoppy character from the Fuggles and Centennial, and a bitterness of 35 IBU (mainly from the Target hops). The malts in the background seem just about right, with only a tad of honeyish sweetness from the pale crystal malts.

4596 Kinn Knutholmer Norway Witbier 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

750 ml corked and wired bottle, courtesy of the brewer. ABV is 4.7%. Brewed exclusively for Knutholmen, www.knutholmen.no . Traditional witbier ingredients. Hazy pale golden colour, huge white head. Typical witbier aroma of coriander, cloves and orange peel - nice. Moderate carbonation in the glass, when the beer finally appears below the foamy head. Soft mouthfeel. Refreshing flavour, notes of coriander, cloves and citrus - but the hops (Northern Brewer and EKG) are too moderate, even for a witbier. IBU is only 15. Still a nice and very drinkable thirstquencher.

4597 Erdinger Festweisse Germany Hefeweizen 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

On tap at Melkebaren, Sandnes. Hazy deep golden colour, moderate white head. Moderate aroma of cloves and other spices, hints of banana. The flavour is moderately spicy with just a hint of banana, moderate but noticeable hops. Has more going on than the "ordinary" Erdinger Hefe-Weissbier.

4598 Founders Reds Rye United States Rye Beer 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

355 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 6.6%, 70 IBUs. Reddish brown colour, big and lasting off-white head. Nice aroma of floral and citrussy hops (dry hopped with Amarillo), also sweetish notes of caramel and orange marmalade. The flavour has also notes of orange marmalade and caramel malts, but is not extremely sweet. There is a distinct hoppy bitterness towards the end, with grapefruity and resinous notes, lasting through the long aftertaste. Good stuff.

4599 Founders Double Trouble Imperial IPA United States Imperial IPA 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

355 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 9.4%, 86 IBUs. Surprisingly pale golden colour, probably the palest American double IPA I’ve seen. Big to moderate white head. Distinct but still relatively moderate aroma of citrussy and piney American hops, also notes of caramel and orange marmalade. The flavour is of course very hoppy from start to finish, but not really extreme. The grapefruity bitterness is partly balanced by a pronounced malty sweetness. Notes of caramel and orange marmalade again. Very bitter aftertaste.
