1 L'Apothicaire Dubbel Canada Abbey Dubbel 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Hazy amber colour with a golden hue, a light-beige head, frothy, bubbly with decent retention and leaving small spots on the glass. Toasted malt base aromas with some nice spices, hints of wheat-banana, mineral water that come out after breathing. The taste is a blend of the banana notes, spices and mild grassy hops. The mouthfeel is on the thicker side, but not syrupy, as the hops create a nice drying finish. The spiciness and grassiness lightly lingers. A touch of brown sugar and caramel all-around. Quite an easy-drinking Dubbel on the lower alcohol side, but still lots going on.

2 L'Hermite Dubbel Canada Abbey Dubbel 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Clean, amber colour with some golden highlights, a big creamy-frothy warm off-white head, good stay and some thicker, wavy, frothy lacing. Big cereal, dark grain aromas with molasses, notes of dark fruits and mineral water. The cereal grains continue in the taste as base with hints of spices, Belgian yeast. It does get a little hazy as it pours, with some particles. A decent Dubbel with a touch more cereal than the sweeter, Belgian ones.

3 Flora Hall Foeder Aged Series: Brett Dubbel Canada Abbey Dubbel 4.2

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Lightly hazed, golden colour with an amber hue and beautiful tiny bubble carbonation. Warm, off-white, creamy head that stays a very long time, leaving some thick creamy lacing. The Brett is very well-blended with the vanilla-oak, woody notes, a tad medicinal and light fruity malts. The taste has a some mint touch to balance the woodiness, light funkiness and fruitiness (apples, mild citrus). Hints of spices and decent dryness in the finish. Some particles come out as it gets hazier. A very good Dubbel that has a beautiful mix of Foeder-oak-vanilla and Brett earthiness with a fruity notes.

4 Royal City Brewing Dubbel Canada Abbey Dubbel 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Pours a clean darker amber colour or light-copper with a frothy-creamy beige head, good stay and some wavy-creamy lacing. The nose is quite yeasty at first, and not the good Belgian one. This changes into a sweet nose with caramel, maple syrup, but also well-blended with some fruitiness, like cherries and other fruits. The taste is pretty malty with a lot found in the nose, but really, really mild. A little less balanced as well with the light hops that should not show in here. Easy-drinking for a 7.5% ABV, that's about it.

5 Le Castor Dubbel D’Hiver - Winter Dubbel (avec raisins à vin rouge) Canada Abbey Dubbel 3.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

Forgot I had one of these in the cellar, purchased at my local Metro store. Pours a clean deep amber colour with a beige head, decent stay and some nice lace. Raisin and apple notes for aromas with a mild butterscotch base. Hints of dry wine, earthiness. The taste has pretty much the same. Not too rich so goes down nicely. Smooth, just not my thing to have another.

6 Mill Street Minimus Dubbel Canada Abbey Dubbel 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

650ml bottle, clean copper-amber colour with a mocha-coloured head, average retention and small amounts of lacing. Some dark fruits in the aromas, but something is slightly off - kind of chemical, from the hops. Herbal, almost minty. It does calm down, and some caramel and roasted malts show the base. Even hints of nuttiness. This shows in the flavours with a touch of maple syrup. Not feeling much the Belgian-side, even its sugars. More like an Imperial Brown ale, but decent to drink and warm up a bit.

7 Multi-Brasses La Pentecôte Brune Canada Abbey Dubbel 2.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

Weird... comes in a bomber, but with a twist-off neck. Pours a dark brown colour with mohagony highlights. Tanned head with nice lacing and a ring that stays (unlike the head). Very slow carbonation. Malty nose with a sweetness of red apples. Thin mouthfeel with very little stickiness. At first, a real bad taste with some rustiness and mild infection. Then, the mouth got used to it, and got better. The red apples are there too, with the malt. Interesting aftertaste, where roasted malt appears and then, some very light chocolat. Alcohol is very well-hidden and drinkability is decent. Will stick with Unibroue for Quebec 9% ABV beers.

8 Breughel Kamour Double Canada Abbey Dubbel 2.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 5

Written on label "Flavoured strong wheat beer". It pours a cloudy golden and orange colour with a huge white head that is creamy, and then turns into soapy, not leaving much lace. Medium retention and very active tiny-bubbled carbonation. Alcohol is quite present at first, but then goes away, leaving a good scent of fruit, like pear. Also, other aromas are of Belgian yeast and wheat. The mouthfeel is pretty watery with a medium-light body. Taste is odd, with a mix between the pears and some metallic water. Some mild sourness in the finish. Even though a unique brew, not well-balanced enough to make it a good one.

9 Budels Capucijn Dubbel Netherlands Abbey Dubbel 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Last of the Budels brew, part of the 6 pack I got from the LCBO. None of the other brews got my attention, let's see with this one. Pours a darker colour, like caramel and cola together. Head is tanned, foamy and fizzy, with good retention and very nice lacing. Lively carbonation. The nose had some roasted malts, molasse and hints of Oud Bruin scents, right after pour. It disappear a few minutes after. Medium-bodied palate. Very pleasant taste with some caramel, toffee, raisins and roasted malts. By far, the best Budels, and the only one that is worth trying.

10 Affligem Dubbel Belgium Abbey Dubbel 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Best before date is 22 06 07. This dubbel pours a deep red-brown which is hard to see through, except for the grape red highlights. The tanned head is lightly creamy, but goes away fast. Some crystal-foam lace is left, here and there. The first aroma I get from this brew is one of Oud Bruin, sour and vinous. Then, after sitting there a few minutes, it smells more like syrup, molasses, spices and hints of dark fruits. Still, a coat of lace tops the brew. The taste is nutty with mild bitterness and a dry finish. Good mix of apples and dark fruits. Notes of cherries with some of the spices. Not the greatest in taste and aromas for a dubbel. Still something worth trying from time to time. Gets better as it warms up, but still Westmalle Dubbel is better.

11 Bornem Double Belgium Abbey Dubbel 3.9

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Came in the Exclusive Belgian ales gift pack, with 5 other brews. Best before 01/02/07. Pours a dark red-brown colour with a big fluffy tanned head. Retention is very long and good thick lace. The nose is milder than expected, with some spices, notes of coffee, raisins, plums, caramel and red apples. Smooth mouthfeel and medium bodied. The taste is also very light with some dark malt, dark fruits, slight bitterness and a clean finish. Very well brewed, just a tad too light on the palate and nose to be an awesome Dubbel.

12 Augustijn Abbey Ale Belgium Abbey Dubbel 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Best before date written on back label is 23/03/07. Pours a cloudy golden-orange colour with a big white head. This one is fizzy and starts disappearing fast, but then, steadies down, and stays for long period. Lacing is good and patchy. Small amount of sediment at the bottom of the glass, and high quantity of tiny bubbles for the carbonation. The nose is mostly of Belgian yeast with a touch of refreshing fruits, like citrus, pears and apples. Medium-thin mouthfeel that is dry. The taste is mild in bitterness with the fruit showing in the aftertaste. Hints of vanilla are also found. Very refreshing and drinkable.

13 Rochefort Trappistes 6 Belgium Abbey Dubbel 3.5

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Sampled at Vineyards in Ottawa, Ontaio. Pours a deep caramel-brown with light red highlights. The tanned head is medium size and creamy with decent retention, but leave a thick coating on the brew. Lots of yeast chunks are at the bottom of the glass. Good creamy lacing. Aromas of alcohol at first pour, but gone as soon. Light fruits like apples. Creamy and medium-light bodied. Taste starts off on a strong bite, but goes to a smooth bitterness finish. Found in the aftertaste are green apples and some mild dark fruits. Also, mild nuts. Quite refreshing and drinkability is excellent for this lighter Rochefort.

14 Sterkens St. Paul Double Belgium Abbey Dubbel 3.9

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Sampled at Vineyards in Ottawa, Ontario. This dubbel pours a deep red colour with slight orange. The head is tanned with decent retention and nice foam lacing that stays. Flaky sediments are all over the brew. Aromas of dark fruits and quite nutty. Same for the flavours, nutty throughout with light notes of chocolat malt and a slight taste of smoke and oak wook in the aftertaste. Thin-bodied with some light tart on the tongue. A very well-balanced and light dubbel that is quite refreshing.

15 St. Bernardus Prior 8 Belgium Abbey Dubbel 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Celebrating review number 600. Part of a gift pack of St-Bernardus brews for Christmas 2005, at the LCBO. Best before date written on back label is 27 04 10. Pours a deep brown-red colour with very slight raspberry highlights. The tanned head is creamy, leaves a bit of lace and has great retention. Sediments of yeast seem to be floating at the bottom of the glass. The nose is quite nutty with some fruitiness. Some tartiness in the mouthfeel. Lots of nuts in the taste, with some good malt. Some bitterness in the beginning, and then comes back in the aftertaste. Alcohol is very well hidden. Great brew, but I still feel it is lacking overall taste and aromas.

16 Maredsous 8 Belgium Abbey Dubbel 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Pours a deep maroon with a huge head. The long lasting head leaves a crazy lace along the side. Nice aromas ranging from fruits, to molasse, to spices. First sip, you can feel the burn. Then, second swallow feels great ! 8 percent, but does not feel like it. Medium -full body and well carbonated.

17 Westmalle Dubbel Belgium Abbey Dubbel 4.2

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Sampled at Vineyards in Ottawa. Had a best before date on the bottle, 05/05/06. This trappist brew poured a dark amber-red colour with a nice creamy head that stayed a while. The alcohol was very noticable in the scent. I could also smell hints of pears and apples. The taste began with the strong alcohol and finished on the fruits mentioned above. Overall, pretty light in all departments for a trappist beer.

18 Leffe Brune Belgium Abbey Dubbel 3.7

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Poured a deep brown colour with red highlights. Head was nicely tanned and frothy. Good heavy lacing and highly carbonated. Nose was composed of sweet malts, Belgian yeast and slight spices. The taste was very mild for a brew of this style. Slight dark malts and light caramel. Not much bitterness and a boring mouthfeel. Very dissapointed in this one, much prefer the blonde. Sorry.

19 La Trappe Dubbel / Koningshoeven Dubbel Netherlands Abbey Dubbel 3.9

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Aka: Koeningshoven Dubbel Trappist Ale. Tried at Pub Italia on Preston in Ottawa, Ontario. Poured a deep golden-amber colour with a mid-creamy tanned head. Had good foamy lacing and a 2mm top coated the brew and stayed. Carbonation was active with tiny miniscule bubbles. The nose was filled with nuts and hints of dark fruits. Taste was mostly nutty with a slight sourness in the start going to a grain aftertaste. Found some bread in the finish and a bit of alcohol. The mouthfeel was smooth with some mild tartness. Pretty decent lower alcohol trappist (or wannabe-trappist) brew.

20 Charlevoix Dominus Vobiscum Double Canada Abbey Dubbel 4.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Bought this one in bottles, and sampled the first time at the pub itself. Poured a dark purple-red colour with red highlights. The head was beautiful, tanned, creamy, had excellent retention and great lacing. Got a blueberry scent at first, then turned into spices and Belgian yeast. Very, very smooth mouthfeel with not even close to a burn. The taste had good fruit with some strong bite. Berries lingered into the aftertaste. Just like all the other Vobiscum brews, this one is excellent.

21 Corsendonk Pater (Abbey Brown Ale) Belgium Abbey Dubbel 4.3

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

Sampled at L'Autre Oeil in Aylmer, Quebec. Poured a beautiful hazy caramel-red colour with a big tanned creamy head. This one had excellent retention and decent wavy lace. Great aromas of red apples and other fruits, like plum and raisins, mixed in with caramel, molasse and some coffee. Smooth full-bodied creamy mouthfeel. The taste is simply incredible, with some roasted malts, raisins and the red apples show up in the aftertaste, with some mild bitterness. Great butterscotch-coffee finish. An excellent well-brewed beer I would enjoy anytime. My favorite dubbel so far.

22 Chimay Première (Red) Belgium Abbey Dubbel 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Pours a brown-red-orange colour with a creamy tanned head. There seems to be a cascade effect of small beige sediments, coming from the head, on down. Not as much retention as I thought it would be, and hardly any lace. Spices and Belgian yeast aromas, but lighter then Unibroue's competition. Very smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Smooth nutty start with some mild bitterness and a clean aftertaste. Some spices, but flavour is not overpowering, quite light actually. Found some fruit as well, like some pear and slight apple. Expected more from this brew, but still a very good start for someone who has not tried a trappist beer. Still, the white cap is my favorite of the Chimays.

23 Abbaye de Floreffe Double Belgium Abbey Dubbel 3.7

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

This Abbey Dubbel pours a dark brown-cola colour with red berry-wine highlights. The tanned head is beautifully creamy and has amazing retention and lacing. The nose is mostly yeast with some roasted malts. The start is good, with a smooth creamy taste and slight bitterness, but the finish is bugging me. It is metallic. Good thing the aftertaste is great again, with the feeling after eating raspberries. Tarty. Thin mouthfeel. Pretty decent brew, except for that finish.

24 Dominion City For Whom Dubbel Tolls Canada Abbey Dubbel 3.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Enjoyed at the Brothers Beer Bistro. Pours a hazy caramel-amber colour with an off-white head, medium retention and light lacing. Aromas of Belgian Ale yeast and bananas. Hints of caramel and citrus. Fruity tasting malts with the yeast and bananas again. Not your typical Dubbel, as missing some complexity, but a decent entry to the style.

25 Ommegang Game of Thrones 004: Valar Morghulis United States Abbey Dubbel 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Pours a dark amber colour, almost copper, with a frothy beige head, good retention and some nice fluffy lacing. Aromas of dark fruits (plums, raisins), caramel, farm yeast and with time, lots of fresh apples. There is a sharp weird hop bites in the taste over the fruits and caramel malts. It gives the mouth a metallic feel which is not as good. Hints of bananas from the yeast in the aftertaste. Not the best Dubbel, but overall not bad. Just not one I would have again, but glad to have tried.
