1 Patagonia Argentina Pale Lager 2.3

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 5

This brew is actually not as bad as it seems. It pours a pale yellow colour with golden highlights. Carbonation is light with tiny bubbles. Not much lacing and hardly any retention. The nose is malty, but almost roasted (hints of nuts), which is what I find in the taste... a slight tongue of molasse roasted grains in the finish. I prefer it too Corona as this one has more punch.

2 Fosters Lager Australia Pale Lager 2.5

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

This one is brewed by Molson Canada under license and comes in a big bulky 750ml can at the Beer Store. Pours a golden colour with a nice small creamy head. Real good lacing for a premium swill, all around the glass. Not much for a nose, very slight malt. Mouthfeel is watery, but not to the max, and very crisp. The taste starts out very smoothly and gets to the finish with mild bitterness and a grain malt taste. Some grass is also in there, maybe in the aftertaste. I don't mind this beer at all, and have it in bars from time to time.

3 Castlemaine Perkins XXXX Gold Lager Australia Pale Lager 1.9

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 3

Comes in 6-pack at the LCBO, under the name Export Gold, and with 4.5% ABV. Pours a golden colour with an off-white creamy-fizz head that sticks around long enough, and leaves good lacing. The carbonation though is pretty low. Smells malty at first, but then turns onto an adjunct smell. Pretty light and watery mouthfeel. The taste is a mix of malt and other macrobrews chemical flavours. Was a good swill dranked from the can, but in a glass... really nothing special.

4 Coopers Sparkling Ale Australia Blonde Ale 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

This Australian beer poured a hazy, orange-gold colour, with a small white head. Particules were floating everywhere in the glass (looking more like spices, than yeast). Could smell aromas of citrus (fruity) and wheat. Tasted mild and fruity (a tad of peach). Sediments form at the bottom of the glass. Does not look like a mass-produced brew, quite pleasant.

5 Lucky Beer Australia Pale Lager 2.7

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

I must say, the little green Buddha bottle caught my eye at the LCBO. Came in a 6-pack and reminded me of Heineken when drank from the bottle. Poured, it is golden, clean, has a big frothy white head that stays quite long (one of the longest lager head retention) and lacing is pretty dirty. Grainy malt nose at first, and then, some hints of pears. Mild malt taste, but still grainy, that reminds me of some local micros. A better than average pale lager (if you forget the nice bottle).

6 Carlton Crown Lager Australia Lager 2.6

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

My friend Mart bought a case of 24 of these when I visited him in Doha, Qatar. Pours a golden colour with an off-white head, decent retention and nice film lacing all-around. A thin coating also stays on the brew the whole time. The scent is pilsner-like with some malt. Smooth mouthfeel with a little stickiness at the end. Malty taste with a bit of hop in the finish and grain showing up in the aftertaste. Not a bad Australian lager, but thicker than other lagers I had here. Harder to drink many of these (compared to the Beck's - which I also had many).

7 Victoria Bitter Australia Pale Lager 2.2

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 4

Can from the LCBO, says 4.6% and VB only. Pours a medium-light golden colour with a big frothy white cap, decent retention and dirty lacing. Mass commercial beer smell of chemical malt and corn. Crisp and light-bodied mouthfeel. Hints of grass are found in the taste, which makes this one at least refreshing, but pretty boring overall like most mass lagers.

8 Fosters Premium Ale (Special Bitter) Australia English Pale Ale 2.1

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 4

Big can in a convenient store on my trip to Maine. Pours a clean amber colour with a foamy warm cap, decent stay and dirty lacing. Corn taste with amber beer adjunct and a light bitter finish. The smell is not very good, with a typical big macro adjunct aroma. Not bad tasting, but still a big macro that I would not have again.

9 Engelszell Gregorius Trappistenbier Austria Abbey Quadrupel 3.9

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Pours a cloudy amber-purple colour with a big beige head that stays long, as very carbonated. Lacing is thick and creamy. Plum and raisin aromas with fruity yeast, roasted malts, sugars, notes of caramel. Smooth mouthfeel with just slight warming. The taste is a little milder, but still pretty complex. Roasted malts, prunes, toffee, anise and grass. A pretty nice Quad for those who like dark fruits, caramel sweetness and grassy finish.

10 Schloss Eggenberg Hopfenkonig Austria Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 3.5

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Nice golden straw colour with medium carbonation. The small head quickly disappears, but good lacing is left. It has a slight skunky smell, but nothing like STELLA ARTOIS. This pilsner has a very smooth mouthfeel and a dry aftertaste. Sweet malt taste. Overall, quite refreshing.

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 5

This one has corn written all over it ! It pours a golden colour with light carbonation. The white head is pretty big and has decent retention, leaving good lace. Then the corn arrives.... in the aroma. In the taste. Smooth finish. Rather have a Miller High Life then this one.

12 Edelweiss Hefetrüb Weissbier Austria Hefeweizen 3.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 7

This Austrian weissbier pours a cloudy golden-beige colour with a thick white creamy head that has very good retention. The lacing left is not that much, but some is found. Good active tiny bubble carbonation. The aroma is mild, with bananas and spices. I also get these hints of burnt malt. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. The taste though is light and under par for such a style. Bananas, wheat and some spices.

13 Stiegl Goldbrau Austria Lager 3.3

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

This Austrian lager pours a semi-light golden colour with beautiful small bubble carbonation. The head is decent, but the lacing left steals the show. It is full of even spots everywhere. Kind of leopard-like. The hoppy aroma is also mixed well with some malt in the background. The taste is smooth with some sweet malt. Crisp mouthfeel and dry finish. Not a bad lager at all.

14 Kaiser Austria Lager 2.5

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Found this can at a LCBO in Toronto. Pours a clean light golden colour with the typical Euro-lager white head that leaves a slight coat over the brew, and little lacing. The smell of malt is nice at first, then turns to a pils-grassy hop scent. Mild dry mouthfeel that is thin. The taste is a mix of grain and nuts, but not really strong. The small bitterness appears in the finish. Not a bad beer, but mostly for hot summer days... to refresh.

15 Edelweiss Weissbier Snowfresh Austria Krystal Weizen 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Best before 02-2009. This herb wheat beer poured a cloudy golden-beige colour with a big white frothy head, good retention, some little separate lace spots and active carbonation. Very nice smooth aromas of bananas, wheat and yes, oat soap. The one that comes in the push bottle, that makes your hands smelling so nice. I must say that I was quite surprised when I saw the twist-off cap on this one. The palate is quite smooth, and kind of watery, making this one quite refreshing. I can detect a little bubblegum in the aftertaste, but have a hard time finding the spices in the rest of the taste. Orange, wheat, but very well-blended. Overall, a nice weizen that is really refreshing (but was expecting more from the spices).

16 Schloss Eggenberg Doppelbock Dunkel Austria Doppelbock 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Ha, ha... written malt liquor on the front label. Doppelbock sounds better (like classier). Best before date on back label reads 02.2010. Pours a clear brown-red colour with a huge foamy-cream beige head, great retention and pretty spacey lacing. Lots of carbonation, composed of tiny bubbles. The nose is a mix of roasted malts and rusty hops. After a while, the alcohol and grain malts comes out in the aromas. No burning in the mouth at all, pretty smooth mouthfeel for such a high alcohol content. Has that rusty taste (from the hop mentioned) and gives a bitter finish. The aftertaste has some caramel malt and mild coffee. Not a bad brew to get you warm, in this cold winter season.

17 Schloss Eggenberg Urbock 23 Austria Doppelbock 3.1

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Seasonal offering at the LCBO with an expiry date on back label: 06.2009. Pours a rich golden colour with big bubble carbonation (but not too much of it) that forms a foamy white head. This one disappears very quickly though, leaving no lace. The aroma reminds me of malt liquor, but only milder. Malty with notes of apricot. Wow ! Quite smooth for such a strong beer. You feel no burn with this one. The taste is creamy and malty with a touch of wood. Was expecting this brew to be sweeter and syrupy, but not the case, which I find is great. Seems like a really well brewed malt liquor.

18 Schloss Eggenberg Samichlaus Bier Austria Doppelbock 3.7

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

After reviewing the Eggenberg Doppelbock Dunkel, I noticed I had never reviewed their other doppelbock that is one of the world's strongest beer. I went to my cellar, as I remembered I had one there, hidden away. It said on the front label, bottled in 2002, and the best before date on the back label said 10.2007. Oh well, over a year past... but not seen the light much. Let's see... pours a clean caramel-copper colour with a medium beige head, under-average retention and not much lacing. Just like their other doppelbock, lots of carbonation with tiny bubbles. The aromas and flavours are pretty much the same. Dark fruits and nuts mostly. Touches of wine, roasted malt, alcohol, coffee in the finish. Pretty well-balanced taste. Again, the mouthfeel is not burning (just a little in the finish on this one), but nothing for a 14% brew. So, this one was brewed on December 6th, 2001 and it tastes as good as the ones that I tried before the expiry date. Worth keeping in the cellar, and having one every Christmas.

19 Ottakringer Radler Citrus Austria Fruit Beer 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Can from The Beer Store. Oh wow! This is quite citrusy. Pours a hazy light-yellow colour with a big white frothy cap, good stay, but minimal lace. Aromas are bursting with lemon, grapefruit notes and hints of oranges, limes balancing things. Sweet yeast maybe. The taste is a little more juicy with the citrus, but not crazy punchy. Very wet mouthfeel, almost a little too thick to be refreshing, but still works. A nice mild sourness from the fruits in the finish. I really like the full citrus family blend in here. Would have again.

20 Stiegl Radler Zitrone / Stiegl Radler Lemon Austria Fruit Beer 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Pours a hazy lemonade-like colour with a big white head, lasting quite long (especially for a radler), with some foamy lace. Very lemony aromas, like Sunlight, but not chemical or fake. The taste feels even truer with the beer yeast coming through the lemon juices that do not seem too sour. Does not list sugar in the ingredients, but sure seem like some is in there. At least, it is not syrupy. Pretty nice.

21 Stiegl Radler Grapefruit Austria Fruit Beer 3.5

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Single can from the LCBO. Pours a lemonade-looking style, but with a little white bubble head, average retention and minimal lace. Beautiful fresh citrus aromas with the grapefruits in the forefront. You can feel the natural zest. The taste is a little more on the sweet side, but not like a cooler, with the nice balance of mild sourness. 50% beer, 50% grapefruit juice... this is quite refreshing and really good because there is not sugar added. Just the natural sweet from the two goodness together. Could have many of these on a warm summer night.

22 Stiegl Radler Himbeere / Stiegl Radler Raspberry Austria Fruit Beer 2.8

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Pours a clean, light pinkish-red colour with just a trace of super tiny particles. The frothy head is big, pinkish-white with good stay and leaving some thick foamy patches of lace. Mild nose of raspberries with some light malts. The raspberry juice comes out way more in the taste, giving some nice fruity berry flavours, and not too sweet. Does not look like sugar is added. Not a bad raspberry Radler, but seems like the beer is a little lost in here - just diluting the juice.

23 Banks Beer Barbados Pale Lager 2.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 4

This Caribbean lager showed up at the LCBO. Hope it is spicy like their food. Pours a pale golden colour with lots of medium-sized bubbles, a big frothy white head, decent retention and good dirty lacing. The nose is malty at first with some spiciness. Then, it turns into the normal swill aromas that I find disgusting (probably cheap hop... kind of rusty). The taste reminds me of club soda, wet with that mild salty and carbonated gas finish. Some light malt is there the whole way, that is not bad. Refreshing overall (which is what those warm countries want), but not something I seek right now (as it is starting to freeze outside). Ahhh winter !

24 Wittekerke Rose Belgium Fruit Beer 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Wow.... smells great at first pour, but contains aspartame ?? Cloudy pink grapefruit-juice-looking colour with a silky white head, with a little pink hue in it. Decent creamy lacing, average retention and light tiny-bubble carbonation. Beautiful raspberry juice aroma with hints of malt grain (after breathing for a while). You can make the connection with the aspartame and sodas that have that. It shows a bit in the scent, and really shows in the taste. Yes, the fruit juice is there, but where it should be naturally sweet, you feel the aspartame kicking in and killing the finish short. It is a little sticky in the mouthfeel in the end, and refreshing at first. Best before date on back label writes 16/01/10 and says beer as ingredient (as oppose to saying malt, hop, etc... ha, ha). Totally driven for women (even showing on the label), not like most fruit beers I enjoy (cut the aspartame please).

25 Gouden Carolus Ambrio Belgium Belgian Ale 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Second Carolus Gouden brew available from the LCBO and with a best before date of 17/11/12. Pours a golden-amber-orange colour with a big, big foamy head that leaves full dirty lacing. Even though big bubbles form at the bottom of the glass, smaller ones come up to the surface. Quite a special nose with some Belgian yeast, pine needles, bananas, citrus zest and alcohol. Creamy mouthfeel with well-hidden alcohol (no burns). Becomes hazy as the bottom of the bottle is reached with a nice glowing amber colour. Refreshing taste of apples, spices, wood, with some light caramel showing up in the finish. Then, the apples flavours come back in the aftertaste. Some metallic notes were felt at first, but seem to disappear as the brew breathes. A true Belgian ale that is quite interesting.
