1 McAuslan St. Ambroise Cream Ale Canada Cream Ale 4.8

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 10 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10

This (for the time being) has to be my favorite beer. It beats Kilkenny (which is a good beer), but the problem is that you cannot get it any other way then in a keg. That means you have to have it in a pub. Creamy as hell. Wow, wow, wow !! Highly addictive. Wish they would make it in a 500ml can.

2 Unibroue Trois Pistoles Canada Belgian Strong Ale 4.7

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 10 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Sampled in the Trois Pistole Chalice from Unibroue. Pours a very dark brown with some red highlights, but hard to see through. Head is quite creamy for a non-nitro brew and has very good retention. A layer of it stays the whole time and lacing is good. Coriander is the first thing I smell. Then I get a wiff of Unibroue's special yeast. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth. Very smooth that is, with some sweet beginning notes and a bitter middle. 9% ABV is very well-hidden. Dark fruits and malts are the biggest part of the flavour, but other things roam around (that I cannot guess). A wonderful brew, and must I remind you - very smooth.

3 Scotch Irish Sgt. Majors IPA Canada IPA 4.6

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 10 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Tried this one on tap at the Black Tomato in Ottawa. Poured a slight hazy amber colour with a nice head and very good lacing. The nose was of floral hops and sweet malts. Taste started off like a Creemore Spring (delicious - medium floral sweetness) and finished with a very, very bitter aftertaste. Full-bodied mouthfeel. This is the most bitter beer I have ever tasted... and that's just great !

4 Unibroue Maudite Canada Belgian Strong Ale 4.6

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Poured a cloudy amber-orange colour with a few dark particules floating around. The beautiful creamy head stayed a while and left some wavy lacing. It also topped the brew with a nice foamy coating. Aromas were blasting with spices and fruits. The taste was composed of caramel, with the combo and fruits and spices. It started sweet and ended on a tarty bitter finish. The drinkability is top notch for me, even with its high alcohol content. Probably one of my best Begian strong ale.

5 Unibroue Édition 2005 Canada Belgian Strong Ale 4.6

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

Poured a hazy rhubarb red and brown with a super big creamy off-white head. Retention was very good. Lacing was thick and foamy. Carbonation was very high. The aroma was mostly the distinctive Unibroue beer on the lees scent. Wow, this beer is very smooth. For a 10% ABV, it went down very well. It tasted sweet, but not too sweet. The mouth was very complex. Berries were exploxing everywhere, and mostly cherries. There was a slight sourness and some bitterness at the finish. Fruits are all over, even the aftertaste is great revealing a full garden. I have purchased 2 other corked bottles (750ml) of this brew and have stored them in my cellar for future tastings in years to come.

6 Chimay Cinq Cents (White) Belgium Abbey Tripel 4.6

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

Sampled at the Pub Italia in Ottawa with RunningHorse. Had it in its proper Chimay Chalice. Pours a gorgeous hazy golden-amber colour with a nice off-white head, which is creamy and has heavy retention. Also, beautiful foamy lacing. The aromas are fruity and has touches of Belgian yeast. Trying to guess of the fruits, I would say, pears, apples and citrus ones. The taste starts sweet with a fruity and floral flavour, then gets bitter in the middle, to then finish half smooth, half dry with a slight bitterness in the aftertaste. Got notes of caramel somewhere in there. Just plain delicious, especially for a fruit beer lover like me. This has to be my favorite Trappist brew so far. Love it !!

7 Liefmans Frambozen Belgium Fruit Lambic 4.6

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10

Wow ! What an awesome brew. Bought at the Metro on Greber in Gatineau, Quebec. Best before date is December, 2012. Written 2002 - 19 on the cork. Pours a deep purple-brown-red with lots of yeast sediments (of different size and shape) floating at the bottom. Not much head and retention, which I guess is normal for this type of beer. Very nice aroma of raspberry with some Belgian yeast and slight sourness. The taste starts out with the sweet raspberry juices, then goes into the mild sourness and vinegar of a flanders red to then finish into the perfect mix of both of these worlds. Crisp and refreshing mouthfeel. Very light dry and tarty finish. Love this beer ! Will have to get more for the cellar... now that I know that the best before date is a few lightyears ahead.

8 Unibroue L'Éphémère Cassis (Unibroue L'Éphémère Black Currant) Canada Fruit Beer 4.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

Had a two-for-one special last night at the pub I went to, so had a few (o.k. many). Like all Ephemere from Unibroue, I really enjoyed these. Purple-pink in colour, this well-carbonated beer had a good long-lasting head (as most Unibroue beers do). Nice fruity aromas and great black currant taste (not to sweet, always well balanced).

9 Unibroue L'Éphémère (unflavoured) Canada Saison 4.5

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

This brew is the base body of all other fruity Ephemere (without any fruit). It poured a hazy orange-brown colour with a frothy off-white head. As the head dissapeared slowly, a layer of foam was left. The colour is darker then all other Ephemeres. Aromas were of yeast, Belgium sweet malts and spices. The mouth was on the sour side with a slight bitter aftertaste. Had a huge amount of carbonation. This is a great beer a-la-Belgium-Ale-style.

10 St. Bernardus Abt 12 Belgium Abbey Quadrupel 4.5

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 10 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Sampled at Vineyards in Ottawa, from their 330ml brown bottle. Poured a deep brown, non-see-through, with red highlights. The creamy tanned head has extra long retention. On top of it are found extremely tiny sediment of spices, here and there, but lightly. A miniature fizz comes up to surface. Thick lacing is left. The aroma at first is very light. Slight vinegar, but as the brew gets warmer (suggested), it starts having a nutty scent with hints of bread. The taste mostly of dark fruits like plums, raisins, grapes mixed in with some toffee. The nuts are found in it, as well as minimal molasses. A beautiful apple aftertaste is left and the finish is very smooth. The mouthfeel is creamy and mildly tarty. Overall.... Wowwy, Wow ! Wow ! Very nicely brewed, and will definitely try again.

11 Simple Malt Impériale Stout Canada Imperial Stout 4.5

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 10

Pours a black colour with no highlights coming through. Beautiful creamy big head that is brown, not beige, with great retention and thick lacing. Full coffee, molasses and chocolate nose with notes of burnt wood. Smooth mouthfeel, medium-bodied, with no traces of alcohol. Wow... very well-balanced taste with a little sweetness and some nice bitterness. Coffee flavour with the roasted malt, a touch of vanilla and a little smoke. Very well-brewed and I would buy some more of this any day.

12 McAuslan St. Ambroise Stout Impériale Russe / McAuslan St. Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout Canada Imperial Stout 4.4

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Purchased at Marché Omni and comes in a scotch tube, 2010 edition. Pours a real dark brown (almost black) with hardly any ruby highlights. Its head is huge, creamy, everlasting, and moca coloured. Aromas has lots of molasses, roasted and caramel malts, with hints of chocolate, coffee, licorice and spices. Oily mouthfeel with no burns from the high alcohol. Much of the aromas are found in the taste, but this is where the vanilla shows up (from the bourbon aged-wood). Quite a nice treat from McAuslan... always pleasant to see another one from this great brewer.

13 McAuslan St. Ambroise Noire à L'Avoine / McAuslan St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout Canada Oatmeal Stout 4.4

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

This one is really amazing on tap with the nitro, but still very, very good in a bottle (as sampled for rating). Use to have these all the time with bison burgers... excellent !! Pours a real black colour with a tiny bit highlights of red wine. The head is beige, huge, creamy, has great retention and leaves chunky lacing. The aromas are all over, with some roasted malts, grain malts, bananas, molasse and nuts. Goes down very smooth. The taste has the same flavours found in the nose, rosted malt, molasse, light fruits and some coffee and candy. A good bitterness kicks in, in the aftertaste. A very well-brewed and good balanced, excellent oatmeal stout.

14 Abbaye des Rocs Brune Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Sampled at Vineyards in Ottawa, Ontario. Poured a brown-amber-red colour with slight pink in it. The medium head had decent retention with mild lacing. Pretty big chunks (of yeast ?) were floating all around. A very beautiful nose of candy, mint, dark fruit and citrus. The mouthfeel was smooth, with absolutely no burn. The taste was good, because it did not overpower the dark fruit. Also found was some mild nuts, light mint, roasted malt and chocolat. Wow ! An extremely enjoyable brown Belgian strong ale that I strongly recommend.

15 Anchor Liberty Ale United States American Pale Ale 4.4

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

This being my second Anchor Brewery beer of the night, I enjoyed, also being higher in alcohol. Poured a slight hazy golden-orange colour with a huge creamy head. Lacing left was thick and heavy. Tiny bubbles formed the low carbonation. I could smell a strong hop nose and very floral. Tasting it started bitter and had a smooth fruity finish. The bitter part was still lingering. Could also sense hints of grapefruit. A damn good pale ale !!

16 Weyerbacher Raspberry Imperial Stout United States Imperial Stout 4.4

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Yes, I am a fan of fruit beers. This one poured a very dark red colour (opaque black when trying to see through), with a deep tanned head. Aromas were of raspberries (of course) with hints of chocolate, and a creamy nose. Oh yeah ! Tasted very good. Raspberries mixed with coffee. Very well-balanced, and very smooth with a mild bitter/sour aftertaste. Thick mouthfeel. This brew is awesome, just heavy on the alcohol - meaning you can't drink to many of these in a day. Oh well, there's always tomorrow !

17 Unibroue Blanche de Chambly Canada Witbier 4.4

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

This is the beer that started me into the beautiful world of good beers, many years ago. It poured a hazy lemonade colour (light golden-yellow) with a huge white head. The nose was malty and grassy. What I love about the taste is all the different spices you can enjoy. You could taste lemon as well. This brew was very carbonated. Never say no to a Blanche De Chambly... I know I don't. Still my favorite witbier.

18 Mort Subite Framboise Belgium Fruit Lambic 4.4

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

I remember the first time I drank this beer. It was a few years ago at the Vineyards in Ottawa. My friends had dared me to buy this one, near the end of the night. Damn... it was over $15/bottle when I got to the cash. Pours a crazy-ass fluffy pink head that leaves wicked thick and chunky lace, uneven, all over the glass. Scent of raspberry is there, but not as much in the front as the typical lambic aroma is there. The fruit is there in the flavour though, with the mild sourness of a lambic. Very well balanced, and very close the Liefmans Frambozen (reviewed a few days ago). A great fruit lambic for sure. Now I buy it at the LCBO... but still good memories remain.

19 Charlevoix Vache Folle Milk Stout Canada Milk Stout 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

This milk stout pours a dark brown with red highlights. The aroma is awesome with full chocolat and hints of caramel. The taste is mostly coffee, especially in the finish and aftertaste. There is slight molasse and some bitterness. Very smooth mouthfeel and quite creamy. I would say that the aroma is this brews best thing, but overall, a real pleasant creamy stout.

20 Unibroue La Terrible Canada Belgian Strong Ale 4.4

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Oh yeah... very smoooth ! This fine Unibroue product pours a very dark brown colour with red highlights. A thick creamy tanned head erects and stays for a long time. Lacing is left on the side, uniform, and a 3mm layer coats the brew. The aroma is very mild, but berries are present with notes of nuts. Roasted malts are also there at first pour. Mouthfeel is smooooth and creamy. The taste is mostly berries. Cherries at the start, and then the tart kicks in. Long tarty lingering aftertaste. Raspberries, blueberries, plums are fruits that come to mind. Slight nut in the finish. A very good brew, hard hitting and like said... smooooth.

21 Bièropholie Imperial Stout Canada Imperial Stout 4.4

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

Written 2005 on the label. This imperial stout pours a chocolat brown with a creamy head and red highlights. The retention and lacing are heavy. The aroma is of coffee and molasse with notes of chocolat. Rich, but also mild in a way. Wow ! What a nice kick. Chocolat start with a bitter finish. Long coffee aftertaste with chocolat coming back into it. Also, notes of dark fruit as the beer warms up a bit. The mouthfeel is milky and creamy. An awesome impy, and thanks to S8n for this one.

22 Goose Island Bourbon County Stout United States Imperial Stout 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Purchased at Albertson in Vegas. Bottled on 20OCT15, batch 1918, 2015 edition. Poured an almost pitch black colour with a darker brown head that fizz away rather quickly, but not bad for such a high alcohol content. No lacing is left. Aromas of bourbon with the cherry notes, dark fruits (prunes, raisins), molasses, nuts and hints of smoke. Taste of the rich dark fruits with the roasted malts and light hops. Lots going on everywhere, but everything is so well-blended that this is a beautiful Imperial stout.

23 BrewDog Mikkeller I Hardcore You United Kingdom Imperial IPA 4.3

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Enjoyed at Pub Italia with PaleAleRider. Hazy golden-amber colour with a beige creamy head, decent retention and lacing. Beautiful fruity aromas of oranges and mild grass. Sweet taste between the fruit and the caramel. Nice grassy hops, but not too crazy, and the bitterness is smooth. Mild zest in the aftertaste. Wow ! What a nice Impy IPA that has loads of sweet citrus over the hops.

24 New Holland Dragon's Milk United States Imperial Stout 4.3

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Bourbon Barrel Stout at 11% ABV. Pours a dark copper colour with a creamy-bubbly beige head, good retention and some creamy-bubbly lacing. Dark fruit aromas with roasted malts, burnt wood, leather and hints of nuts. The flavours are more on the chocolate malt to start with, but some nice warming, well-balanced mouthfeel continues with some light sweetness from the bourbon oak barrel, also creating some vanilla in the finish. Still, lots of dark fruits. Everything is so well-blended. A very nice brew.

25 Beau's All Natural Fifty Shades of Gris Canada Ale 4.3

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Thanks to PaleAleRider for bringing this one back from the brewery. Celebrating Victoria Day weekend and my 100th review from Beau's. Pours a slightly hazed golden-amber colour with a beautiful, almost creamy warm cap, long lasting and adding some creamy lacing. Oh wow... amazing thyme aromas over the sweet fruity malts that give out rye notes. Flavours are so well-blended with the lighter herbs, fruitiness of the pinot gris barrels, tea and malts. A nice mildly dry mouthfeel with a slight bitter finish. This is so good!!
