Worst "Good" brewer

General Beer Discussion by CHANGEUP45

What would be everyones least favorite, or most overrated "highly recognized" brewer. These have to be breweries that people generally think are very high in quality that you just don't find appealing. So far mine would be Unibroue, hands down. It's garbage and wine makers trying to make beer. Curious to see what others say... and I'm not necessarily looking for mainstream breweries.

In Reply To #3 For $1 per can, I can grab up New England Brewing Pilsner or Steam, which are much better than most of Saranac's offerings. My problem with Unibroue isn't just that their beer is yeasty, but it's the way that the yeast is presented in their beer. I think they claim that each beer has a different unique yeast, but I call bullshit on that. Every Uni beer I have has the same yeast flavor, spicy, bready, and really just too much for the styles. I like Rogue, but their marketing is a little confusing to me. They used to sell their XS line in 12 oz. bottles for $3.49. Now they have these ceramic beasts that are asking $16+. Why the hell would they change? I really hope that they see sales start to dip on the XS line and go back to the old bottles. I'll have to disagree with the quality of the beers though. I think they do a great job with most styles they try. Brutal Bitter, I2PA, Smoke Ale, Dead Guy, etc, all very good IMO. I've always considered the pacman yeast to be relatively clean. Mmmm, difference of opinion, delicious. Cheers!

I agree on the Rogue marketing thing, and I brought that up to the owner of the local beer store here (the largest Rogue retailer in the state), and he explained that while the Morimoto is essentially the same beer, it uses slightly different ingredients (Soba in place of Buckwheat for example, supposedly leading to a slightly sweeter flavor profile). However, I agree that it sounds more like a marketing tactic trying to milk the consumer for a little more money in my opinion (along with making things very confusing for us trying to categorize their beers). If we all agreed about everything, there would be no need for a site like this (or thousands of different beers for that matter). Yes, we thrive on different opinions....so let's hear some more!

Spoetzl (Shiner beers) Sam Adams Capital Brewery

Gotta agree with a couple already mentioned, Sam Adams and Shiner. A couple other brewers I don't like that may not be so main stream are Flying Dog and Mendocino. Flying Dog just makes way too many sub-par and unexciting beers. Mendocino is so-so, they have a couple acceptable brews, like the IPA, but others, including the Peregrine Golden Ale, are just bad. That plus the fact that I can only get them for $9 a sixer here keep me from buying them. As for the Rogues, I must say that I love them. I think all of their brews are well crafted and perfectly balanced (coincidentaly I just picked up two new ones, the Half-A-Weizen and St. Rogue Red, which I am very excited to try). Recently though, I am agreably frustrated with their ridiculous price hikes. And like Cott said, I hope the sales on these over-priced concoctions fall so they realized they screwed up and are driving away loyal customers like me.

In Reply To #7 Good call on Flying Dog. Disgraceful beers... I like Mendocino actually. The IPA is very nice, although it's not a hop bomb like some of the West Coast monsters. The Eye of the Hawk is pretty tasty too.

In Reply To #8 I enjoyed a few of Mendocino's like the IPA and Eye of the Hawk, but dear god try the Peregrine Golden. It tastes like Coors Light. I know I shouldn't let one brew sway my opinion on the entire brewery, but dear god it was one of the worst beers I have ever had.

In Reply To #2 I definitely agree with Buzzard's Bay and Wolaver's (the organic beer - LOL). Most of the beers I've had from them are merely average. I've got nothing bad to say about Saranac though. I can get a 12 pack for 10 bucks (or even less) and they are far better than swill and offer a wide variety. They aren't one of the better brewers by any means but for quality per $$$ I think they are near the top. Unibroue to me is disgusting stuff, and judging by reviews I've read and people I've talked to they are pretty well respected. Maybe it's the style, I don't know, I just know I've had a few different ones and they pretty much taste the same. And yes, very yeasty. I've used the "winelike" description before, maybe it's not the best way but that's what they seem like. Rogue I like. Have had a few recently and I don't think I've tried one I didn't like yet.

In Reply To #1 Sierra Nevada, Mendicino, and Sham Adams in a neck to neck tie for awful. Runners up, Rogue, North Coast, Lost Coast, Becks, Heinkneecans, DogPiss Head, and Ottinger from Bayern. Still everyone of those folks earn more income then I do, Nicht Mein Bier. But they are damn sure someones.

Heinekin, Becks, Sam Adams. Some of the brewers mentioned previously, I really enjoy MOST of their offeings. Rogue does some wonderful brews. I've tried one of theirs however, that was way sub-par. I managed to not let this spoil me from the rest of their stuff. I've enjoyed every Unibroue I've ever tried. Thanks for the tip on Magic Hat, Cott....I was considering doing a #9 clone.

Well recently had Unibroue Trois Pistoles and I must say it was pretty good. That's the first Unibroue beer I've tried that I liked so maybe I'll try a few more and see if I can get rid of the "worst good beer" label I have given it.
