Curious about some opinions on TV shows

Non-Beer Discussion by STOUTLOVER72

What is our brothers and sisters opinion that are from the great Southern region of the US regarding the overabundance of "redneck" TV shows. I'll grant you that the South is not the only place where rednecks hail (ever been to Northern California? It's not all hippie SF stuff, trust me). Off top of my head, theres...that Honey Boo Boo Show, Swamp Men, Gator Boys, Legend of Shelby the Swamp-Ass, Moonshiners, Duck Dynasty, Bayou Billionaire, Redneck Island, Lady Hoggers, Hillbilly Handfishin, My Big Redneck Wedding, Hollywood Hillbillies, Buckwild, Myrtle Manor, and probably another 5 or more I'm missing. Are you offended in any way of the exploitation of this way of life (which may not be your lifestyle at all, but it's portrayed that people are from the South are like this) or do you chalk it up to good fun and you're happy to see something good to come out of a poor, uneducated (in some cases), lifestyle?? Kind curious. I wonder if the same kind of shows that focused on life in the projects and stereotyped people that lived in E. St. Louis/Compton/DC/E. LA/Oakland/Detroit would be as popular as what's on today.

Exactly. I watch the channels that broadcast these shows so I see the promos and just shake my head. When is the last time there was "learning" on The Learning Channel? Probbaly why they just call it "TLC". I'm waiting for something like "Honey Redneck Boo-boo Gay Tattooed Midget Mom with 12 kids by her brother, cousin(s) and other associated kin".

I can honestly say I've not watched any of these shows, however I watch the channels these are broadcast on so I see the commercials and just groan. So I'm with FB in wondering, why anyone would find entertainment in this. To Oiznop's idea, those sitcoms were just that as you said. These "reality" shows are more raw and show a lot more of the pimples on what's perceived by these shows as "the South" than what Green Acres or The Andy Griffith Show ever did. These shows do perpetuate they stereotypical southern redneck, which is obviously what they are shooting for. It's not fun to laugh at unintelligent rednecks living a life of luxury in Beverly Hills right? Fish out of water stories have been around forever.

Now THERE is a show I'd watch. Hell. I just might develop a semester's curriculum around it.

I'm with farging bastige. They don't offend me, only my intelligence (or lack of it.) I do NOT watch any of them knowing how fake and scripted they are. "Reality" shows must have audiences though or they wouldn't keep cramming them down the viewers' throats. Anyone with half a brain knows that the way Southerners are depicted in these shows is totally false; well, 87% false. [;)][:)] There are rednecks everywhere. And dumbasses. Why give them a stage? It's all about the almighty dollar and the "entertainment" factor I presume. Now JUSTIFIED, THAT is a Southern reality show. Those guys could be in my county. Really.

I refuse to believe in the concept of 'Reality' shows. Survivor is NOT a reality show. It is a game show with a $1MM dollar prize. I know people who have spent time in the wilderness. There was no $1MM prize waiting for them. They didn't get to 'vote people off', they didn't get to run obstacle courses and do puzzles for steak and donuts. They didn't have a medic waiting for them every time a scratch turned into something worse. Contestants on Survivor have it easy compared to what reality actually is. Hell, there are days I'm not even sure what I watch on the news is reality anymore.

Justified.... No doubt. I'm related to those people. Henry County, AL might as we'll be Harlan County, KY.

I have seen a few episodes of Duck Dynasty in the break room at work. I'm told that a couple of those guys really own a very profitable duck call manufacturing business, and one of them is the CEO. I remember Hillbillies, Green Acres, Petticoat Junction from back when. There's a difference between the old sitcoms and the current fad of "reality" shows. Whether it amounts to derogatory stereotying or not seems to depend on the viewer's perspective. I watch NFL Football on TV. Other than that, most of my TV viewing consists of ONLINE movies, music specials & videos, and old TV shows including the different Star Trek series. [^]

I've seen more rednecks in Indiana in 4 months than I've seen in a lifetime in Alabama.
