Chimay Spéciale Cent Cinquante

Industry News by BLUESANDBARBQ

This should be on everyone's wish list. From Chimay: This special edition is a full bodied and distinctive strong beer developed within the abbey to celebrate and honour the 150th anniversary of the brewery. Produced with 100% natural ingredients, its pale golden robe and champagne sparkle is topped by a rich white head of foam. The distinctive bouquet evokes the rich fruity and complex notes of the Chimay yeast in harmony with a delicate spicy note and the fragrance of fresh noble hops. At 10% alcohol, the flavour is full bodied and complex with a slight but refreshing tang note and a crisp hop finish that will delight the palate. So, the model goes: * Make very limited supply to commemorate 150 years * Ship to very limited areas in North America * Retailers (and distributors probably) gain hefty profits * Ale will probably get better after cellaring ("up to 15 years") * Nothing special, just another Trappist Abbey Ale Is that about it?[?] Am I missing something? I still want some.[:)]

I wanted some too as I love Chimay :) Maybe it's still on it's way to Kansas/Cali and one of your BeerPal brethren will send you one. I want to know why it's been available in Europe and Canada since early July (it was packaged mid-June) and the US just got it mid-September. There was only 1 batch made. No wonder it's getting low reviews, the hop lovers are probably complaining the hops have faded. ;)

No thanks. I barely ever drink the regular Chimay's. I like em, but think they are overrated and for the coin, I prefer other bers. Add to that the already jacked up price and "rarity" of this beer, and that mean's I'll likely never see it. Even if I was interested, EBay has stopped 99% of bottle sales, and with what this would demand on the trade market (thinking more RB than here - most guys on here just trade a box for a box) I ain't gonna trade away a plethora of goodness for one bottle of "good" beer.

I'll stick with the White, pretend I'm drinking this and save me some money. Chimay is nice, but not that nice.
Retail price in Canada was $12.75 for a 750ml bottle, and after the samples I had I wouldn't pay that. Chimay Red and Koeningshoeven Quad and Dubbel are all roughly $7.00 for a 750ml bottle and far better tasting (and far easier to get).
So Chimay White was $12.75 and the Red was $7? Weird. For my, it goes White, Red then Blue with Chimay. Anniversary/gimmick beers are the best...lol.

No no no :) Chimay Spéciale Cent Cinquante was $12.75/bottle. Chimay White is only in small bottles, $2.80 Chimay Red is only in the 750ml bottles, $6.05 (went to buy some after work and ended up with relatively fresh Ayinger Celebrator instead) Chimay Blue is only available via private order ($88.40/case) and better beer bars ($10+ depending on the bar).

They've been sold out in New York for over a month. Several stores sold out the same morning they received their shipments. Rumours have it being hoarded by bars and restaurants.

56 cases of this finally hit Ontario, bottled May 9, 2012, and the cases say, best if drank by May 9, 2013 (the original press release mentioned it could be cellared fur 10-15 years). The Ontario price was set at $10.00 (Cdn) ($9.85) which is considerable less than the $13.99 it sold for in Buffalo in October. Hopefully a year old bottle will taste better than the samples I had last summer. The 56 cases (672 bottles) sold out in less than a day. On a side note, Chimay Grande Reserve has finally become a year round item around here and the Chimay Doree is supposed to be making a one off appearance later this spring.
