What happened to the once illustrious McDonalds?
Non-Beer Discussion by CLASH
Apples in happy meals? Low sodium fries? A healthy image? Get the hell out! McDonalds is bad enough without serving apple slices and not putting salt on stuff. http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/food/2011-07-26-McDonalds-apples-happy-meal_n.htm

Oh yeah, McD's is a phenom business model. Make their food cheap as hell and semi-tasty. There customer is the middle-lower class families that don't want to spend $10 on a burger. So they have their dollar menu, which offers some kinda tasty items.

Yeah, they're actually a real estate company when you get right down to their business model. Sure, we think of fast food, but their business and book value and growth is ultimately about all that property.

I'm sorry, but I never saw John Wayne walking around munching on apple slices. He died with 4 pounds of undigested red meat in his stomach, and thats how I want to go. I'm not knocking people who make healthy choices, but if you are worried about your cholesterol, body fat percentage, or surviving into your sixties, then perhaps McDonalds isnt for you.
Property growth isn't all that great, historically. Does the corporation own all the locations or are they franchises? If it's a franchise then the store owner would own the property, not the corporation.

I call it "eating out of my ashtray"... on the road and in a hurry... no need for a dining experience - just some chow to plug my pie hole, I go with a chicken sandwich& Mc double off the dollar value menu... a bit over 2 bucks and i'm down the road... wash it down with a mountain dew.

I don't know the revenue breakdown for the US McDonald's corporation, but it is a combination of franchise fees and rent. A high percentage of it is rent, as the franchisee frequently does not own the property. It's actually an interesting case study for business. I don't believe other fast food joints are like that, but I could be wrong. It's been a while since I read about this.

I'm with you w.r.t. making any laws around McD doing this. It is what it is. But realize they'll adjust to the markets they are in or want to be in. If demand is there, then they'll adjust to get more business. If it is at the cost of the folks that just want the grease, they'll likewise readjust. Like any business, they've in the past ventured out to adjust to broader customer demand (Boston Markets being just one example) and then found it wasn't part of their core and sold it and refocused on their own selves / brand, etc.... For me, I like having the OPTION to go with apples instead of fries. But, I think it's silly to have apples as the default choice. Maybe they've found that folks don't know they even have the option, so going with apples by default and switching out to fries by request would be better for everyone. Can't imagine, but...

I wonder how many people realize that Subway has more franchises than McDonald's. I remember hearing years ago that they had more in the US, and apparently now they have more in the world at over 33,000, about a thousand more than there are golden arches. But I have to say that I have noticed that they are freaking everywhere. In Portland where I lived there were 3 along the same road on a few mile stretch. Now in North Carolina I've seen 3 on the same road in less than 10 miles, and there's hardly anything else around. Of course, McD's still outsells Subway at $24b to 15b. Not surprising considering how slow it seems the service at Subway is, and I've only seen one with a driveway that is also freaking slow. McDonald's also makes a killing during breakfast. Getting back to the once illustrious, I did have fond memories of the place when I was little. Back in the days of Styrofoam boxes and when I thought I could actually win with those Monopoly pieces.
