Dogfish Head/Victory/Stone Saison Du BUFF
Beer Discussion by KINGER
Had it twice now, still dont' get it.
1st bottle was split between a few of us at a recent tasting, went down alright.
2nd bottle was all mine a few nights ago, struggled to get through it.
All the herbs really reminded me of Grassroots from Great Lakes which was not a good beer.
Thinking lots of herbs in a beer, even a Saison or perhaps especially a Saison is not a good thing for kinger......let's have the natural spiciness from the yeast, hops and high fermentation temps have their way and not supplement with Simon and Garfunkel.
That is all.

Cott hasn't rated anything for over 2yrs, let alone re-rate. So, I wouldn't rely on his reviews from that long ago to make this point. I know I certainly feel differently about many beers I rated only once more than 2yrs ago, especially the first 1k I rated. I will say this... The bottled Du BUFF was meh. The draft version I just had down at DFH in Rehoboth: Fantastic!!!

[...ahem!...] Cott, I am interested in anything Bill is selling, aren't you?
That. But, Victory generally gets a thumbs up from me. Except on most Belgian styles. And on collaborations with other brewers I don't like. So....

I hear the same thing about a lot of DFH beers in regards to quality in bottle vs. at the brewpub. Shame, I can remember when a lot of their bottled product was top notch.

Soooo, there was a time when a lot of their bottled product was top notch? Was this when the woolly mammoths roamed the Earth?

5 or 6 years ago, the beers were all very nice, but then many of them started taking a strong turn towards the sweet/cloying side (i.e. 90 minute used to be dry and very hop forward) or were just plain off (i.e. 60 minute is now either grassy or buttery or sulphury or...). No clue what happened, but something definitely changed in that time span.

Wow, big thread on the beer I just tried to swallow. I'm glad I'm not the only one that didn't like this herbal disaster. Its only saving grace in my 2.4 rating was the aroma. It was interesting, but ended up completely unbalanced and left a nasty aftertaste. I've had a few saisons in the past couple weeks so I wasn't expecting this. Not sure how anyone finds it pleasant.
Trying to figure out why this is aliased; I have 3 beers in front of me: DFH Saison du Buff Brewed and Bottled by DFH Milton DE: 6.8% ABV Victory Saison du BUFF Brewed and Bottled By Victory Downington PA: 6.8% ABV DFH / Victory / Stone Saison du BUFF Brewed and Bottled by Stone Escondido CA: 7.7% ABV If anything, the abv of the Victory and DFH are the same, so shouldn't those two be aliased? In any case, I have 3 prices but can only enter two. Since each says it was bottled in a different place, I still think we have 3 beers. Just my two, thanks.

Yeah, i don't see why the DFH version is aliased with stone's, yet Victory gets an entry. All three are different, and should be listed as such (like they used to be). Although, i dont remember the original releases being different abvs like the new batch. had all three last time, and all three just last week. they sure taste different. Out of curiosity, when one rates two beers with two different scores, like I had rated DFH and Stone's version, how do you decide which to drop and which to keep when combining two beers into one?
