Non-Beer Discussion by FRETWALKER
Prompted by some of the comments to the "Top Ten" football threads, famous (or will become famous) people you've met, and your impressions of meeting them. Aces or asses? Gotta be some good stories here...

I met 80s MTV V-J (back when MTV had anything to do with music) Adam Curry in a mall. He was pretty cool...I was about 15 at the time, so bear that in mind. I met Bo Diddley after a show in NYC. I met up with a friend who said he was taking me out for my birthday. He takes me to this club where Diddley is playing. We meet up with him afterwards, completely by accident of course...he is drunk, I am drunk, my friend is drunk....it was awesome. I met Clive Barker (horror novelist, the brains behind the Hellraiser movies) a few times at Fangoria conventions in NYC. He's a wonderful Limey...a great sense of humor.
Rode in an elevator with Alice Cooper in Chicago once, about 1990 or so. I was too intimidated to say anything as I was about 12 at the time. Older and I would have at least said hello. I talked to Doug Stanhope at a bar before a show of his I had come to see. I thought it was cool he wasn't trying to act funny or in character. Tiny little dude (I guess I thought he looked taller on tv). He is easily one of the best in stand up comedy. I got to meet a few politicians while at grad school and undergrad, but nothing too personal. A friend ran into Charles Grassley before an Iowa football game and had a nice conversation with him.

I've met several members of Jefferson Airplane/Starship at various times over the years, long after the original band broke up. Two of the best: After a "Jefferson Starship Unplugged" show at a small venue in Cincy, Paul Kantner came out and sat on the edge of the stage talking and autographing for about an hour, until someone finally came out to make him leave. At an even smaller club, (basically a Hot Tuna show w/o Jack Casady)Jorma Kaukonen, Pete Sears, and Mike Falzarano sat down for a few leisurely cold ones while their gear was being packed up... I'd drink with them, anytime! Bela Fleck was also good to meet post-concert with the Sparrow Quartet, loves to talk about music in general. The whole band, in fact, was a delight to meet! I enjoy watching sports, but most sports figures I've met were just jerks. A few exceptions: Cris Collinsworth (at least when he was playing) was as laid-back and witty as he seems on the air. I worked on a charity PSA with Forrest Gregg, very nice guy, though he might've been the most intense man I've ever met, just an air about him. Sam Wyche, I don't know if he even likes beer, but he'd fit right in here, very intelligent, with a twist. Now, the highlight... 1975, late November or early December, I was in Toledo for 6 weeks of job training... hotel living, nothing much to do besides read the paper cover-to-cover every day. I'm not a big hockey fan, but I knew who was playing in town, not that I cared. Anyway, I walked into the hotel bar late one night and jumped on a barstool, a stool away from a guy wearing the most rumpled suit I've ever seen a man wear in public, looked like he'd worn it to the gym for a 3-hour workout. As usually happens in a bar, bar talk ensued, where ya from, and so on... After 10-15 minutes, he offered a hand, "By the way, I'm Herb Brooks" Most muscular hand I've ever shaken. Not a bonebreaking grip, just a good, firm handshake with a rock-hard hand. "Mike Kelly, pleased to meet you... Hockey coach?" "That's me" "Heard the score on the radio earlier, we won't talk about hockey" "Thanks!" and bought a round. The closest we came to hockey that night was when he kicked my butt in a half-dozen games of Pong. A couple hours later, we were well-toasted, the bar closed, nice meeting ya, etc. Imagine my surprise, 5 years later, watching the Winter Olympics...

I've met quite a few musicians over the years. I've shook hands and said hello to many, but I usually try to strike up conversations or buy them a beer or some tequila. Otherwise to me it's just like saying hi to a stranger on the street. Not sure how well known most of them are around here. But some of the more popular folks I've had the opportunity to hang with- Perry Farrell (Janes Addiction), some of the fellas from Incubus, Mike Gordon (Phish), Ziggy Marley, Tommy Lee, The Donnas, and Reel Big Fish (a loooong time ago). I was just with DJ Lord from Public Enemy last week. He was a pretty cool guy. About 6 years ago I was hanging out with Steve-O from Jackass on his tour bus. He was pretty crazy and in the beginning of a huge drug habit so it was quite intense. And then living in Green Bay for the majority of my life, it's not uncommon to run into Packer players here and there. Back when I was younger, they used to have free meet and greets at the stadium before the season started. Not sure if they do that anymore. But I met Brett Favre when he was still doing that sort of thing. I used to play Reggie White's son in soccer so he would always be at all the games. Super nice guy.
Met Pat Borders and his family once at the CNE just after The Blue Jays won the '92 WS. he was a nice enough man but you could tell he kind of just wanted to be left alone to enjoy time with his family, which is most certainly understandable. Of course most of the carneys could've cared less LOL. Tom Cochrane - leterally bumpedinto him as he was getting out of a cab onto Queen St. here in Toronto - dude's a fucking a prick and he looked all whacked on blow. Ian Hill - for those who don't know who he is he is the bass player of Judas Priest. Anyway years ago there was a massive summer tour called "Operation Rock And Roll" which featured Alice Cooper, Priest, Motorhed, et al and after the show a bunch of fans were calmouring by a gate for a shot of anything and, Hill, realizing this, was the only one, sans security to come out and great each and every fan individually and sign anything and I mean anything that they had to be signed

Ollie North. A genuine guy who got a raw deal (and new full-well that anything ever went awry, he'd take the fall). A great American. Former Governor of Alabama, Guy Hunt... helped push his stuck Ford Crown Vic off the muddy track around the football field at my sister's high school graduation where he was the guest speaker. Didn't get a "thank you" from him or any of his body guards who were pitiful in their loafers and suits. He should be in jail.
