Stout or Porter Preference
General Beer Discussion by MINGO51
That last post got me to wondering which of these two styles more people on the site perfer. I'll probably be in the minority here but I like porters better than stouts. So what does everyone else think?

In Reply To #5 "there are too many times that I can't tell the difference between the products" Now I don't feel too bad about struggling to tell the difference. Taste test... yeah, that would be fun!
Well, i'd like to extend an open invite to any beerpal coming through the Philly area to stop by my place for some beer (that is if I am free). And if we are still on the stout/porter topic, we can open a few blindly. :)

Generally speaking I prefer stouts. I just love them, especially a fresh well made brewpub stout. For a long time I actually did not care much for porters, putting them in a class of brews that I just wasn't crazy about (red ales are still in that class in my book). Recently, however, I have discovered some great porters, some of which I would put in a class well above even your average stout (but still not above the best). A short, not all inclusive, list of these would be: Sam Smith's Taddy,Baltica, Aldaris, and some good brew-pub porters.

In Reply To #8 Well, I think there is no hope for me! I've had the Sam Smith's Taddy, which by far was the best one, but still a merely average beer (to me).

In Reply To #7 Blind taste test. Sounds like fun! Which one do you prefer?
In Reply To #10 Its a tough call, I really like all Stouts (Dry, Sweet, Imperial, Foreign). But porters can be fun to. Granted I like the Baltic Porters (dogwood's porter is freakin incredible), and I really want to try Thomas Hooker's too. So I guess I prefer stouts, and strong porters next with regular porters last.
OK, so to determine for myself, I rounded up a stout and porter from the same trusted brewing company. I got the Sierra Nevada Porter and the SN Stout. Hands down the Porter was better. I wonder if this is the general case, or can you guys recommend a brewer who has a better Stout.
In Reply To #12 Stout is a very generic term. Try a dry stout, an oatmeal stout, a sweet stout, and an imperial stout. Porter is very generic too. Brown porter, robust, and imperial porter. To name a beer for each, dry stout=sierra nevada, oatmeal=rogue Shakespeare stout, sweet=mackeson XXX stout, imperial=old rasputin or storm king. Brown porter=otter creek stove top porter, robust=anchor porter, imperial=baltika porter. Give those a try, they should be available in your area. Those should give you a better understanding of the styles.
