Does beer age differently in bottles than in cans?
General Beer Discussion by MYKE
Just something that occurred to my awhile back. I don't really know, but it would seem to me that an aluminum container would have better shelf-life capabilities than a brown bottle.

It would seem to me that the can would not let in any light at all, but does the storage in aluminum affect the taste? Would it also be susceptible to temperature fluctuations as well? A glass container might be able to have a more regulatory influence upon temperature changes. Maybe brown glass isn't the best container as it lets in some light; a completely opaque bottle (like a Delerium Tremens) would probably be best: no trespassing photons, no added taste, stronger safeguard against heat exposure. ...just hypothesizing...

I'm thinking that it would age differntly. I don't know for sure, but I would guess that beer in cans doesn't have enough yeast (or any viable yeast for that matter) to "bottle condition" like other beers in bottles would so that would affect it's conditioning.
Is yeast added as a separate step in the bottling process? I know I have only seen bottles with yeast sediment, but is it possible to duplicate this in a can? I don't think anybody does this, but could something be "can-fermented"? Is yeast the main thing that adds shelf(cellar) life to a beer?
Cans are lined with a polymer coating, there is no metal contact until you pour the beer out and then, only as it hits the edge. I would think that the aging effects would be minimal in a can. It's more air tight and as stated, hardly, if ever bottle conditioned. I am not going to look it up now, but I believe it's the same idea if you compare screw cap wine bottles to real corks, real corks allow for aging effects.

And I had a thought about kegs, which are essentially big cans. They seem to keep for a long while and I've even seen kegs scored at room temp. Now I know kegs are draught beer and that draught beer is, from what I've always been told and what my tongue seems to confirm is that a draught vcersion of a beer is brewed somewhat differently. Again I'm just hypothezising as I don't really know
Whoever told you about beer to pour out of a spigot has a rectal cranial inversion. Beer tastes different from bottle and draft because of the process it goes thru while being bottles.

The vast majority of craft beer is the exact same beer whether it is from a keg or a bottle.

Haven't seen the Stubbs charcoal around here yet. But I do have a 6# butt and a slab of ribs that I'll prep tomorrow as well as my kalterkartoffelsalat ( German potato salad).... Among a few other odds and ends - and beer.
