Unibroue
General Beer Discussion by COTTRELL
For anyone who hasn't heard the bad news yet: Unibroue was bought out for $36.5 million dollars by Sleeman. Hopefully Sleeman doesn't ignore the couple hundred threatening e-mails I sent them over the past couple days. If you care about Unibroue, email sleeman@sleeman.ca, or info@sleeman.ca and let them know how much you appreciate Unibroue the way it is.

I don't know where you guys are getting your info from, but Sleeman is not going to destroy Unibroue. They just had to do the move to get fully into Quebec's market. It's great to see a third brewery going to war with the two big guys: Labatt and Molson. Now, the great Unibroue products and the good Sleeman products can easier get through all of Canada. Why would Sleeman kill most Unibroue beers ? It does not make sense. These great products already have their market, it costs nothing more to keep these beers alive. Hail Unibroue !!
In Reply To #5 I'd be pretty surprised to see Sleeman purchase Unibroue and not change anything. At the very best, Sleeman will only reduce the amount of some of the less popular beers brewed. I expect to see a decline in the special beers like Terrible and Edition 2004 and such. It's been proven in the past, when a large brewery buys out a smaller one, the intergrity of the brewery goes down. Miller/Celis, Anheuser-Busch/Redhook, etc.. Is it likely that Sleeman will completely ruin Unibroue? No. Is it likely that Sleeman will make some small scale but unfavorable changes? Probably. But, as with everything else, time will tell. I wouldn't expect to see any changes for at least a year, then we'll see what happens. Again, I urge everyone to write Sleeman and express their concerns. If Sleeman becomes aware of what a huge following of loyal fans Unibroue has, they'll be less inclined to change anything.

Hey Chopz...Why did the wankers at Coors buy Cafferys and destroy it (i.e. prevent it from coming over here from Ireland)????....SO THEY CAN SELL THIER OWN SWILL CALLED KILLIAN'S RED!!!!....Think about it my friend....This is a business world....I am all for people making money....just do it without sacraficing quality or destroying a good thing!.....Which will more than likely happen in this case!...Vive Unibroue!!!!!!!!

I understand what you guys are saying, but it's not like Sleeman is the biggest. I would be very concern if Labatt would of bought it. It's a good exemple with the Coors thing, but Sleeman and Unibroue are in the same country. It's not like Sleeman will destroy Blanche de Chambly to make there own white beer. They only bought what they could not produce. Now, they have a full line of exellent beers. Time will tell... but if they do destroy Unibroue, I would totally boycott Sleeman.
Hey guys, I know I'm late on this one, as I'm new, but I really don't think that there's anything to worry about. It wasn't that long ago that Sleeman was a micro. Even though they originally started in the early 1900's, they had to sell the company in 1933 to pay off the taxes they owed to the American government for smuggling beer during prohibition. It wasn't 'till 1988 that they started going again. As for Unibroue, I remember hearing about Robert Charlebois, one of the major shareholders, being arrested for drunk driving just a bit over a year ago. As Robert is a celebrity in Quebec for being a succesful singer since the 60's, the drunk charges made quite a bit of headlines around here. I wonder if that had anything to do with it, seeing as his career as a musician hasn't done anything for the last 10-15 years.

No idea what it means, so I'll make my Unibroue purchases within the next month or so.

I doubt they screw with this line as it's been quite successful. Still, I'd see it as no big loss. Liked the last two Unibroue beers I've tried but didn't care for any of the others.
