Don't Review Chinese Beer!

Industry News by COTTRELL

Hell, don't even drink it! 95% of Chinese beer has cancer-causing formaldehyde in it. No, seriously. Good thing there aren't any Chinese beers imported to the US that are worth my time and money... Read on: http://www.foodconsumer.org/777/8/Formaldehyde_illegally_used_in_Chinese_beer.shtml

Damn, I did not know that! That stuff is dangerous! I think the last Chinese beer I had was tsingtao, which was pure ****. That is the beauty of Communist regimes, they put way too much emphasis on means of production and put way too less emphasis on means of quality. However, I guess that is good for the People's Republic of China since they want to make the population forget how bad their policies are, LOL. [:)] On a final note, maybe the green bottles Chinese beer comes in detroys the cancer-causing formaldehyde since it destroys everything else about a beer, just a thought.

Did anyone read the whole article? It doesn't seem like it. At the end it basically admits that the formaldehyde problem is peanuts compared to what you get in the US. Here's a quote:

quote: In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of formaldehyde solution (37 percent) in chicken to inhibit salmonella growth for up to 14 days. The use limit is set at 5.4 pounds per ton or 2.5 kilograms per ton, which is equivalent to 925 ppm.
It's hard to tell if they're saying it's 925ppm of pure formaldehyde, or the solution, but either way it's nothing compared to the 1.2ppm found in Chinese beer. I'm guessing that not 100% of the formaldehyde put on the chicken is digested by humans (maybe some gets washed off, or is absorbed into non-edible chicken parts), but this is still hundreds of times the amount found in the beer. Finally, the end of the article says, "The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services listed formaldehyde in gas as a carcinogen." That means to me that in liquid form, as in beer and chicken, it's not a carcinogen and we shouldn't worry. This is nothing more than a bunch of media hype in my opinion. For all we know, the levels in US beer are 100pm LOL. The only real issue is that the Chinese brewers aren't supposed to add it, but they do. Oh well, I don't plan on drinking a lot of their beer anyway [:p]

Man, that article is even more useless. I was looking up the use of formaldehyde in chicken and couldn't find anything. Finally, I checked out fda.gov and did a search. I found my answer in Title 21 - Food and Drugs Subchabter E - Animal Drugs, Feeds, and Related Products Part 573 - Food Additives Permitted in Feed and Drinking Water of Animals Section 573.460 Formaldehyde states:

quote: (b)(1) The food additive is formaldehyde (CAS No. 50-00-0; 37 percent aqueous solution). It is used at a rate of 5.4 pounds (2.5 kilograms) per ton of animal feed or feed ingredient. It is an antimicrobial agent used to maintain complete animal feeds or feed ingredients Salmonella negative for up to 21 days.
The section is talking about animal feed! So 5.4 pounds of it is put into the chicken feed, not into the chicken that we eat.
