" Beer from Slaný used to be recommended as the number one in Bohemia " a famous Jesuit historian Bohuslav Balbin wrote in his third book " The Diversity of the Czech Kingdom ", published in 1861. Royal City Slaný can indeed be proud of its long and famous tradition of brewing beer, which culminated in the early 17th century, when there were ten brewing town houses, three inns offering accomodation and meals and two pubs in the suburbs. In 1618 brewers in Slaný produced nearly 20 000 hectoliters of beer, which was at that time a respectable amount. Much of the production was exported to the whole kingdom, where this type of beer was very popular. Ondrej Antoš who in 1518 got the House, today known as Modletický, brewed beer since 1530. The Antoš' was a representative and an important family in the city's history. One of its members, Vlaclav Antoš, held the office of imperial magistrate, from 1569 - 1587. In 1578 he had the house rebuilt into its current form. It contains a remarkable renaissance portal with a label containing the marked year and depicting the symbol of the anchor, whose shoulders are stylized into a monogram " W " ( Vlaclav ). Another owner, after whom the house was ultimately named, William Modletický, also ran Slaný inns for a certain period of time. A promising development was negatively affected by events after the Battle of White Mountain. Slaný became a vassal city of Earl J. Boøita Martinice. He abolished the right to brew beer and had his own brewery built in 1629. During 1794 - 1798 a famous Czech brewer Bud František Ondøej stayed there. He is considered to be a pioneer of Czech brewing industry. He is the author of a book " Fundamental Knowledge in Brewing " ( 1801 ). Count's brewery was in operation until 1884. Since then, the history associated with production of beer in Slaný was interrupted for more than 135 years. Antoš' brewery founded in 2010 is renewing the tradition of brewing quality beer in Slaný. Only the highest quality domestic ingredients are used for its production. Czech hops from the nearby are Žatec and the Moravian malt, which is prepared in a unique way. The beer is tapped directly from the cellars, unfiltered and unpasteurized in order to retain its unique features of live beer as our ancestors knew.
