Elsewhere began in Florence, Italy from opposite ends of a bar. Sam and Sara Kazmer — the co-founders of Elsewhere Brewing Co. — started their life together with a series of bold decisions that eventually led them around the world. After meeting in Italy, Sam, a metro Atlanta native and West Point graduate, accepted a new job in Tacoma, Washington with the 2nd Ranger Battalion. Sara, a Chicago native and recent Loyola graduate, decided to move to Tacoma as well to join Sam and start work in the marketing industry. While living in the Pacific Northwest their love for craft beer began. Sam started home brewing after a parachuting accident trapped him in the apartment for several months. Sara quit her marketing job and started managing and bartending at a new brewery that opened across the street from their apartment. In 2017, Sam was medically retired from the Army. They decided to roll the dice and try their hands at starting a craft brewery. With a background in marketing, Sara knew the key to a great brand was a great story. She proposed that they take a year to travel and learn about beer around the world before settling down and starting the brewery. This proposal initiated a year and a half long journey through North America, South America, and Europe drinking the best beer everywhere and meeting with the brewers and owners behind the iconic and delicious drinks. While they learned a lot about beer, their greatest discovery was that without good people, delicious food, and welcoming spaces, beer lost much of its beauty. In other words, a beer alone can be tasty; however, a beer alongside a wholesome plate of food, enjoyed while sitting in a comfortable seat next to a friendly neighbor and helpful bartender is a memorable experience. They returned to Atlanta, Georgia to apply what they learned to opening a craft brewery.
