Brewed to celebrate Barack Obama’s inaugural as the 44th President of the United States, and the first black person to hold the office. A potent stout with a fair amount of peated malt in the grain bill. This adds a smoky character to the beer which obviously also has roasted aromas from the dark malts and roasted barley as well as loads of citrusy hop notes from the US hop varieties. In the US this beer is marketed as Xbeeriment #44. The reason for this is that any references to President Obama would be permitted by US authorities only if the brewer had a written permission from the White House. So the dressing’s changed, but the beer stays the same!

Bottle, as Xbeeriment Barack, at Schouskjelleren, Oslo. Contract brewed for Xbeeriement at Amager Bryghus. Black colour, large tan head. Roasty aroma, notes of coffee, hints of dark chocolate, wood and ashes. Dry roasty flavour, notes of coffee, woody notes, a hint of liquorice. Not easy drinking, but nice.

Bottle @ The Beer Kitchen, KC .. . Pours black, medium foam .. . quite light smoke, some charcoal and day old wet bbq'd wood .. . abv seems right, 7.7 seems to fit better than the listed abv .. . a pretty well made brew .. . .

Pours a luscious opaque sable with a fairly thick light tan head that leaves some decent lacing. Rich aroma is smoky with strong tones of molasses, fine coffee and semi-sweet chocolate. Flavor fills the mouth with smoked wood, semi-sweet chocolate, molasses and quality roast coffee with hints of caramel and toffee. Texture is thick, fizzy and oily, leaving a subtle tingle and a nice mocha finish. If you like stouts, this is worth a hunt.

Tasted at the Triple Rock Sour and Barrel Aged Fest on 2/13/2011. This Smoked Stout pours a dark black from a 500ml bottle. Small to medium sized tan head. The aroma is chocolate, fruity, smoky and sweet. A medium bodied smoked beer. Malts are chocolate and coffee, with lots of dark fruit and cherry. The hops are herbal and earthy. Decent carbonation. Nice balance. Touch of smoke, with works well with the cherry and coffee maltiness. Finish has some more smoke and a touch of alcohol. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
