Westmalle Dubbel is a dark, reddish-brown Trappist beer with a secondary fermentation in the bottle. The creamy head has the fragrance of special malt and leaves an attractive lace pattern in the glass. The flavour is rich and complex, herby and fruity with a fresh-bitter finish. It is a balanced quality beer with a soft feel in the mouth and a long, dry aftertaste. The Dubbel contains 7% alcohol. ince 1856 the monks have also been brewing a dark Trappist beer along with their table beer. Since the recipe was modified in 1926, they have been brewing slightly heavier beer. This is the foundation of today’s Dubbel. he 33 cl bottles are distributed individually, in baskets of six or in 24 bottle crates. The Westmalle Dubbel is also the only dark Trappist beer available on draught in some 300 selected hotels, restaurants and cafes, from kegs of 30 and 50 litres. Dubbel Trappist continues to ferment, making the draught version slightly sweeter than the bottled version.

Beer is a rather nice, Pepsi-Cola brown atop of which rides a substantial and billowy beige head of considerable foam. Nose has hints of molasses mingling with alcohol and fermenting old fruits. Palate is creamy, a bit stinging yet pleasant. Taste is rich and wonderful. Carbonation dances on the tounge as flavor notes of faint chocolate intermingle with overripe fruit and roasted caramel apples. Finish is sweet and lingering, yet creamy and biting all at the same time. Very good.

Poured out dark brown with a light head. The aroma is nothing very special. The mouthfeel is thin in my opinion. The overall taste is pretty average. Not a bad beer just nothing special.Just not what I expect from a Belgian beer.

Pours very dark brown with a thick head that last quite a while. Strong initial hit of raisins coffee with a wonderful lingering treacle aftertaste. Positively tongue-tingling!

Love Dubbels and this one is no exception. Murky dark brown. Huge frothy head to start but dies too quick. Not much lace. Dark fruit and spice aroma. Flavour has dark fruits, plums and raisins. Spice, yeast and I taste some banana. Full bodied with a nice alcohol warmth in the throat.

Dark brown color and a small, but long lasting, beige head. Aroma and taste of malt, caramel, dried fruit and some alcohol. Not as good as the trippel at all, but definately a very decent classic trappist.

I've been holding onto this one a long time, at least a couple of years if not several, with many other beers I've been carefully cellaring. This one's a beautiful dark brown, almost coffee, a bit ruddy and cloudy, with a dense cap. Aroma of raisins, dates, and sweet bread. The flavor is sweet & tart cherry and dough with just a hint of kola nut. Very tingly. Will want to retry a fresher batch sometime.

Another bottle I enjoyed at Bistro l'Autre Oeil in Aylmer. Pours a very frothy light brownish head and has a hazy, light brown/coppery appearance. Pretty good lacing. Fairly excessive carbonation. Yeasty sediments are clearly visible. Aromas of dark roasted malts, dark chocolate. Alcohol does come through almost immediately but not offensive along with flavours of caramel, light chocolate notes, raisins, yeast and barley malts. Warming sensation. Creamy and mildly drying mouthfeel. Goes down real nice and easy and at 7%abv, just perfect.

Opaque brown with a more than ample head that hangs around for quite a while. Dried fruit - raisen - aroma in the nose and flavor with added plums and caramel to the latter. Big, malty back. Very nice.

Pours a semi-transparent brown with a massive 3-4 finger head that takes its sweet ass time. I could cut it with a knife. lots of carbonation like you would expect from a Trappist style beer. Aroma is sweet and a tad boozy at first but levels off. Detects strong hints of pears and raisins. Taste is fairly strong with hints of booze, caramel, and light metals. Warming feeling as it goes down. Usually Trappist brews hide the booze well but this one seems to let it all go, it isn't really a bad thing but it is not what I am used to. But as you sip on it most of the booziness goes away. Very complex beer but it is not the best Trappist I have had. Well done but I will stick with the Rochefort sisters.

from my notes: Tiny bubbles. So drinkable. D-180 baby. Uniquely Belgian. Old world amazing. Toffee. Aside from a touch sweet, it's immensely enjoyable, and drinkable. Rum-raisin. A very slight off-taste in the finish. Such a well-balanced sweetness/drinkability. I wish I had more now. Aromazing.

Nice and tasty, it has a slightly sweet caramel, raisin taste, and is very smooth. Really enjoyable drink. Poured into a goblet and had it slightly chilled, and sampled it as it settled to room temperature. Poured the sediment into my glass near the end, and the final sips were very smooth and mellow!
