Our latest amber brew is a traditional German-style altbier. German brewers have long been famous for their light pilsner beers, but those lagers are a relatively recent world phenomenon (poplarized in the 1800's). The humble "alt" is a style that traces its root back to the Middle Ages ("alt" means "old or old-fashioned" in German). Not as sweet or fruity as an American Amber, the altbier style features rich caramelized malt flavors, and a well-defined hop bitterness up front. Rhine Heights fits the bill nicely. Malt flavors are rich and complex, hops are in balance as bittering element, but don't contribute to the aroma or flavor perceptibly. A hearty malt-forward German amber ale- PROST!

Pours into a pilsner glass, crystal clear and a deep copper color with a moderate tan head that holds up well and leaves light lacing. The full mouthfeel that starts rich and smooth turns crisp-bitter. Soft and rich malt flavors yield to the taste of tangy hops. The finish is long and lightly bitter but a tad thin, the only thing that mars this delicious, otherwise well-balanced beer. Much, much better than the Vintage Amber.
