Russian Imperial Stout: Imperial Stouts derive their name from the Imperial court of Katherine the Great who commissioned this beer style to be brewed by Thrale’s brewery in London, England for export to Russia. Our Imperial Stout lives up to that, and then some; with copious amounts of dark roasted malts that translate into a wonderfully rich and complex beer with notes of ripe dark fruit, black currant, cocoa, and black licorice. Enjoy a snifter of this luxurious beverage after dinner with a fine cigar or your favorite chocolate dessert. If you’re feeling adventurous, try it with a nice wedge of your stinkiest blue cheese and a plate of fresh raw oysters, you won’t be disappointed.

Sampled on 9/25/2009. This Russian Imperial Stout pours an eclipse black color from a 22oz bottle. Medium sized tan foamy head. The aroma is chocolate and coffee with some dark fruits. A medium bodied Russian Imperial Stout. The malts are chocolate and coffee. The hops are earthy and floral. Touch of vanilla, wood and dark fruit. A nice solid stout. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Bottle shared by sloth, what an RIS, what’s wrong with you raters? Pour was deep dark black with a brownnish head having some red hues to it, the head with a somewhat delayed formation developing after each pour - very nice! The aroma was perhaps the best I’ve ever experienced in an RIS, strong oatmeal graininess initially, slightly burnt toast and roast, chocolate, licorice, faint coffee. With increasing temperatures the coffee intensity increased a bit along with vinous notes and eventually some alcohol (although the latter in a not distracting fashion). The flavor was flat out impressive, although admitedly it didn’t QUITE live up to the aroma (a tough act to follow). Vinousness came on a little stronger than desired for perfection (per my tastes), but this thing had all of the aroma in it too, finishing with that nice roasty, slightly ashy, bitterness. The mouthfeel was fully, big, only slightly warming for the bignesss (although the alcohol was certainly there). Go get yourself one of these if you can, pleasant stuff. And, Bert, much thanks to you for sharing this one!
