a cheap, fairly well balanced sixer from trader joes. not something i'd get again, as there are livelier ambers out there, but the nutty malt and hops are done well enough, and a sixer was $4.99 til recently.

Pours a clear, dark, coppery amber with a rather thick off-white but not too persistent head. Aroma is about average, malty with hints of fruit and caramel. Flavor is mainly malty, slightly bitter, with faint nutty and caramel hints. Texture is silky smooth and just tingly enough so that you know this is beer.

This beer poured a reddish brown body with a medium sized white head. It had aromas of lightly roasted malts, coffee grounds and caramel. It ended with a long slightly hopped finish.

nice enough looking brew, dark amber in colour with a nice sized frothy/creamy off-white head. Slightly toasty malt aroma with a slight spiciness in the background. Weird taste to this one, its not as malty as the aroma would suggest and is actually very "fruity" and sweet in taste. OK mouthfeel , semi-dry finish. Not bad beer but really othing to recommend it either

Fleeting white head tops a fairly clear red body. The head fades to a weather pattern on top. The aroma is freshly sliced apples, green leaves, wood and a bit of cherry. The lightly sweet caramel flavor is nicely balanced by a bit of crisp, slightly spicy hops. While not exciting, this ale is tasty enough to keep you interest and keep you not minding another bottle.

Not shabby. Nice slight roasted malt character peeking in through some crystals and rye. Relatively earthy reddish color. Smells of hops, rye and roast barley with some malty sweetness. A good, if moderately bland selection.

To be blunt, I'm not very proud to admit that I've been mildly impressed with the Goose Island contract brews (exclusive to the Trader Joe's line of stores). The Stockyard Oatmeal Stout was pretty good -- and this one (from the so-called Trinity Brewing Company) isn't half-bad either..., and that's coming from someone who doesn't normally enjoy Red Ales...!
What chaff's my hide with most Red beers is when the brewer cuts corners, and simply dumps in a butt-ton of Crystal 40L into the mash. Yeah, it'll look red alright -- but will also often be way too frickn' sweet and cloying -- almost to the point of killing a drinking session, IMO.
But while this does look fairly red (well, more amberish, really), what counts is that this appeals to my sense of sheer "likeability". That is to say, this not looks decent (nice lacing, BTW), but has the rest of the package sewn up nicely, too.
Malty? Yep, to say the least -- but not going overboard, since this is pretty quaffable, too. At no point in time did I feel the need to wash my mouth out with salt water to wash away any sticky sugary cloyingness. No, this also has enough things going on the hop bill to give this a fair amount of balance overall.
Not a perfect beer, by any means. But for the price, and for the look on my face when I tried this and it didn't suck..., it's a pretty decent value, overall.

Dark amber color. Small sized white foamy head. Aroma is roasty, carmely and sweet. A medium bodied Irish Ale. Malts are caramel and sweet. Hops are slightly bitter. Slight hints of smoke and peat. Smooth taste. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

This brew pours with a deep amber body topped by a thick head with some lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet and malty with a little candy sugar and a touch of caramel. The flavor is bitter and slightly sweet with an off hoppy flavor. Medium bodied, smooth and slightly dry.
