As we pull off our parkas and think toward sunshine and patios, we crave something a bit more brisk, a bit more quenching. Enter Bitter Rival, a hop driven wheat ale brewed with 100% Canadian wheat and barley malts and hopped judiciously with American Amarillo and Pacific Crest Blend. Bold, bitter, and bright, it already has us thinking of longer days and warm breezes.

Picked up a crowler (946ml can) at the brewpub. Pours a fairly big frothy off-white head and has pale golden orangey appearance. Leaves behind some sticky lacing. Moderate carbonation. Aromas of wheat, herbal and grassy hops as well as some mild bready malt and floral notes. Flavours are fruity and citrusy, some wheaty and yeasty notes as well. Slick and smooth mouthfeel, also a bit dry in the finish.

946ml can from the brewery that pours a golden-amber colour with an off-white warm cap, good stay, bubbly and leaving foamy lacing. Aromas of diacetyl, so butterscotch and buttered popcorn a little. The taste has this as well, but thankfully the hops come in to add bitterness and dryness in the finish. Not feeling the banana and bubblegum notes of the wheat. Wish I could. Not crazy bad like some cheap diacetyl brews, but nothing to get again.
